10 the examiner Thursday July 14 1977 Two nurses foTJnd guilty of poisoning patients DETROIT AP Two Fili pino nurses were found guilty by US federal court jury Wednesday of poisoning three patients at Veterans Ad ministration hospital in 1075 One of the nurses was acquitted on murder charge The two women each face possible life sentence on the poisoning convictions Both women also were found guilty of conspiring to poison the patients at the Ann Arbor Mich hospital with the pow erful musclerelaxing drug Pavulon Neither Filipina Narciso 31 of Ypsilanti Mich nor Leonora Perez 33 of Ann Ar bor displayed any reaction as the verdicts were read in the courtroom by the judges clerk Miss Narciso was acquitted of one charge of murder and of one charge of poisoning More than 50 breathing fail ures occurred at the hospital during July and August of 1975 Several of the victims died but it was never clear how many deaths were directly attributed to Pavulon District Court Judge Philip Pratt allowed the nurses to re main free on bond He said he will set sentencing date after he receives presentence re port The jury had deliberated for more than 93 hours since get ting the case June 29 after 13 week trial Most of the respiratory ar rests occurred in the intensive care ward where Miss Narciso and Mrs Perez Worked on the evening shift The women originally had been charged with two counts of murder seven counts of poisoning and one count of con spiracy But the judge granted directed verdict of aquittal on some of those charges midway through the trial saying the prosecution had failed to present enough evidence to sub mittoajury The prosecution presented testimony placing one or both defendants near each victims bedside minutes before they stopped breathing But no witnesses testified seeing either of the nurses in ject the patients with Pavulon The prosecution did not offer motive for the poisonings and stressed that it is not required by law to do so During the course of the trial prosecution questions to defence witnesses seemed to suggest that revenge for overwork was the motive Defence lawyers argued se curity at the hospital was so lax that virtually anybody had the opportunity to commit the crimes Two Fillipino nurses were found guilty by federal court jury of poisoning patients at Veterans tdministration hospital in 1975 Leonora Perez 33 left of Ann Arbor and Filipino Narcizo ill of Ypsilanti were convicted on three counts of poisoning and could face life im prisonment Miss Narcilo was found innocent on murder count AP leln Not by age alone At Seagram we notebook Poor Senate attendance look only to the quality OTTAWA CP Liberal Senator JJ Greene brushes aside criticism of the poor at tendance in the Senate by say ing quality rather than quantity is what counts The value of the 104seat Sen ate should not be measured by the number in attendance but by the quality of the perform ance by those present the On tario senator said this week during the chambers national unity debate The debate opened Feb with about twothirds of the senators absent larger at tendance has rarely occurred since The public galleries usually contain no more than dozen spectators and frequently no journalists bother to cover Sen ate debates Senator Greene said the lack of importance of attendance was understood by the late Sir Winston Churchill fonner British prime minister who perhaps knew and understood Parliament better than any other statemsman of our cen tury When Churchill rebuilt West minster after the German bom bings of the Second World War he deliberately built the Com mons of such size as to ac JOIT Dupain MIMI Wt SSW HIP CHAIRS ASSOCIIIDI commodate only small pro portion of the total number of members of Parliament eligible to sit Senator Greene said EXPLAle REASONS He did this so that on great occasion when there was need for immediate and important parliamentary action there would be in the House sense of crisis urgency immediacy and important occasion just as in any forum where there are more people wanting to get in than there are tickets avail able The question of attendance by senators is often touchy one Most times when news report documents poor at tendance senators angrily chastise the press Senator Greene speaking on press criticism of Parliament quoted another former British prime minister Stanley Bald win who said note the barons of the press are after me They seek power without responsibility which has been the prerogative of harlots throughout the ages of on outstanding investment No competition Greene said senators often feel they are in the oppo site position possessing respon sibility without power which in the eyes of the IittIein formed at times appears to render us some species of po
