Service HOLLYWOOD Weve finally grown up Cloris Leachman all but shouts ICS so thrilled to be out of the Family Hour Or at least she hopes shes permanently out Phyllis the CBS television series in which she stars has been tried out twice recently in later time slot than usual and Cloris was vastly pleased by the in novation Weve been crimped and cramped by the Family Hour she complainsNo cant think of any specific taboos we worked under but with every script weve felt picked at Censors feel they have to do something to keep their jobstheyll admit this you knowso they pick at things And you cant be creative if you have to answer to judges finally went to the president of CBS about water bed show we wanted to do It wasnt vulgar in any way wouldnt want to do show like that But was afraid it was going to be ruined by the censors so went to the president of the network about it And yes she got to do the show without drastic changes It should be emphasized right here that Cliris isnt fighting to convert Phyllis into vehicle for the debate of shockingly controversral issues She doesnt want it to preach the pros and cons of cannibalism or perversion or even the lesser vices dont consider it social Cloris Leachman commentary she says not that have anything against social commentary Anything can be goodor bad But there is matter of timing Public tastes do seem to go through cycles As for my own tastes cant say what like thats on the air now because can hardly ever watch television Idonthavethetime Ive hardly seen any new shows for the past we years Cloris did see several episodes of Roots to which she gave only limited ap broval This television writer definitely soft on soaps 2Muppel Show 22 Baseball 77 fair 0f the Almy DENSIBS if Strikes Spares and 97 David Steinberg nancing for the arts will bein creased and directed to making them available to larger au diences Secretary of State John Roberts said Saturday Most of the countrys major music and theatre organizations have been hard hit by inflation during the governments restraint period While grants did go up about eight per cent across the board this year it wasnt enough to meet increased costs But few if any have gone into bankruptcy as the Canada Council at one time feared they might because of the stringent government grant policy Roberts speaking to the clas ing luncheon of threeday con ference of arts administrators and broadcasters at the Na tional Arts Centre said the cabinet has agreed in principle to an increase in federal funds for the arts But the amount and details have not been determined he said The arts centre conference jointly sponsored by the CBC was called to discuss how Cana dian performers and per forming groups such as orches tras ballets opera and theatre companies can get more time on radio and television and have their works sold more readily in record shops LITTLE PROGRESS No concrete steps were taken Apart from the CBC the broadcasting industry was lightly represented Spokesmen for the recording companies argued about the relative merits of small independent producers in Canada and the Canadian branches of the big multinational corporations Roberts voiced reservations about how far the arts should be pushed on the road to general pularity There is danger He said that they will be trivialized into entertain ment Mediocrity might drive out the excellence now pre vailing in many fields More than 200 delegates ap plauded summation prepared Humphrey Burton head of BBCTV misic and arts It declared that the arts are essential to society and every one has right to aljoy them Broadcasting is privileged use of public resource and the government has duty to allow it to thrive but otherwise must keep its hands off it Somethings are far too im portant to leave to politicians or civil servants Burton said Alan Wood Canadian vice president of the American Fed eration of Musicians said the union is ready to discuss and negotiate on any point
