dcarving hobbyist has library display By DAWN WHITEIIEAI After viewing Stanley Hathways exhibition at the Barrie Public Library it is hard to believe he started woodcarving as hobby only five years agoin his own words to keep me busy Well he has been very busy as anyone can see who visits this show The carvings cover such varied items as totem poles and Indian plaques African masks and sculptures pioneer im plements and many hasreliefs including copy of Picasso painting Apart from six original pieces leg Kempenfell Kelly codesigend by grandson Mike most of the carvings are authentic replicas based on illustrations from books One exception is an interpretation of sketch by public school student This sketch was purchased by the Ilathways during an art auction at Warnica School Some of the exhibits are working models the water pump on the stylized model of Swifts farm 1855 actually pumps water and the adjacent meat hoist can be operated The wood mementos of Swifts meat company are as result of Hathways 35year association with that firm He fashions many of his pieces from logs collected by himself and his wife Phyllis from around Big Bay Point where they live The signature on the carvings comprises the intitials of both Mr and Mrs Hathway as the latter provides con siderable help with such things as sanding polishing and painting Many of the tools he uses are
