Count sports Worrod paces By BILL CURRAN The return to batting form by veteran shortstop Kerry Worrod has been one of the key factors in the marked im provement of Tottenham Bears of the South Simeoe baseball league Another is the fine pitching of Ed Mason and former Beeton twirler Jim Robinson Our team is really starting to come along said an en thused Ken McCullough coach of the pesky Bears cautious ly predicting the club should make the playoffs if this im provement continues If we do that we might just surprise the oppisition he went on then after moments thought added the comment lot depends on the breaks But our players are determin ed to give it good try Leading hitter in the league few seasons back Woorod got off to slow start at the plate this season then regained some of his oldtime form in blasting four home runs in six games including distant homer when the Bears downed the Majors at rillia to 61ast weekend He has been big help the Tottenham pilot said with obvious enthusiasm in referring to the slugging of his play ing assistant coach knee injury which placed outfielder Mike Doer in Stevenson Hospital at Alliston handicapped the team when he was missing from the lineup But other players have been coming along and filled the gap noted McCullough Jim and Dan Doyle are two valuable members of the team who usually play in the outfield although Jim also takes turn on the mound when needed Dan has been hitting and fielding well since returning to action after an appendix operation Another member of the family Frank Doyle who used to play in the outfield as well is now working in Toronto Tom ilurst and Pat Leary are two other versatile per formers who share in pitching duties as well as playing other positions smooth fielder as well as sharp hitter Worrod is an important cog in the infield at shortstop Paul Feehely at first Brian Banks at second and Roy Chapman at third all have been playing good baseball along with Dennis Pendlebury who has been hitting well Tom McCullough is the dependable catcher and Gerald Lynch is another capable outfielder Red Sox to play at Tottenham Barrie Red Sox will have chance of testing the improveL ment of school We started having night course for gymnastics last winter and it was such suc cess thought we should have something during the summer iiioiit hs as well hesaid Four years ago we had county meet and there were on ly four schools in it and this past season there were 14 schools thmuglitout the county taking part All of our teachers here at the school are involved during the winter with the program and that speaks highly of the in terest generated There are 120 children enroll ed in the course so far and ooper attributes some of the success to the 1976 Summer tllympics in Montreal Theres no doubt that the Olympics focused some atten tion on the sport he said It is just great sport for kids because it is individual and most kids can do at least some of thethings The program may not be set up to produce top level gym nasts but with the effort put forth by some of the young competitors during visit on Thursday is any indication anything is possible The big problem with gym nastics is the time Cooper said There just isnt enough time for mest of the kids to pro gress We try and give in dividual coaching if the child shows certain degree of skill on the apparatus but as said before that isnt our aim For more information on the course contact George Cooper at the Forest Hill Public School between 030 um and 330 pm the rings the balance spo Giffen challenges Georgian for lead Greg
