12 the examlnor Tuesday Jun 14 1977 Sports corner Unique program being offered By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor An opportunity has opened up for girls and boys ex pecially girls to 16 years of age to get involved in an un ique summer recreation program ThlS Summer Gymnastic Camp offers five sessions begin ning July and continuing through to Sept Nicky Emms coordinator of the program is hoping the idea Will catch on and flourish She is looking to good tum out Thursday when registration takes place at the Barrie Central Collegiate and at Eastview Secondary School be tween 930 pm Emms feels there is definite need for program of this nature Throughout the winter months there were 250 kids in volved in gymnastic programs she pointed out Come the summer and it all ends While the course is open to both girls and boys Emms says its the girls which should benefit the most personally feel that theres not enough offered for g1rlssheoutlined From my past experience working as playground leader for three years noticed there was no specific sport offered in the summer program for girls If girls wanted to participate in sports they played on boys teams For this reason Emms felt that the number of girls involv ji ed in summer sports dropped The enrolment of girls dropped because one they had to compete against boys and two the sports offered were not interesting to them Emms said this was only understandable as the sports were geaared for boys and not girls She feels gymnastics may be the answer Gymnastics is an individual sport which allows the per son to compete with himself Team sports were always problem for girls because we could never get enough together to make team she said Emms said that something had to be offered that would be attractive to girls to get them to par ticipate physically other than the option of joining boys baseball track hockey or lacrosse teams Gymnastics has proven to be the sport she said The Summer Gymnastic Camp is funded in part by grant from the Experience Here you take it Goaltender Steve Donnelly of the Paul Sadlon Motors peewees hand off to teammate dur ing recent game against Huntsville at the Eastview Arena Barrie
