in Simeoe County grown on his Dads Vespra tobacco farm where twenty acres of the fruit are grown for the pickyourself customer Baker Photo Strawberries early at garden in Vespra By BRIAN BAKER One of the largest strawberry growers in Central Ontario is Barrie area farmer Adrien Ger vais who grows 20 acres of the fruit for the local pickit yourself market on his two hun dred acre tobacco and cash crop farm on the 9th Line of Vespra just north of Sunnidale Road The interesting point is that this former Quebec farmer discovered that strawberries are the perfect fruit to grow in conjunction with tobacco be cause the seasons of the two crops do not overlap by wide margin thus he can devote his attention fully to the straw berry harvest which comes ear ly and then to the tobacco harvest TOBACCO GROWER Mr Gervais who is one of the only 12 tobacco growers still re maining in Simeoe County there were originally 130 finds that strawberries can be planted in the same spacings as tobacco and in rows of the same fortytwo inch width Hence the same planting machinery cultivators Sprayers and ar tificial fertilizer spreaders as well as irrigations system can be used without even changing the settings for one working in either crop Actually the strawberries do not exactly grow themselves Planting almost 140000 plants is no small task At planting he applies 500 pounds of fertilizer Last fall he applied another 300 pounds of nitrate and another 150 pounds this spring They must be regularly treated to prevent insect damage Cultivation and her bicide treatment must be car ried out at the proper time to prevent weed growth On his very open sandyloam soil however he finds that even though everything else is right in dry weather the crop requires heavy irrigat ion So far this spring he has been obliged to irrigate the crop three times at rate of seventy five tons per acre He feels that no crop is more profitable to ir rigate than strawberries which fruit is largely composed of li quid and natural sugars This year the extra care has really paid off remarks Mr Gervais who along with his wife and two sons Morris and Ian really like living in this part of the country The fruit gives every appearance of be ing extra large and abundant Never before have seen strawberries come in as early as June The season is so early that he opened the patch to the fruit stand operators and housmvives during the weekend Keen competition looms for 9th canoe marathon ANGUS Staff Judging by the interest shown so far there should be good entry list and keen competition for the ninth annual
