Doug Shedden was picked by the Hamilton Fincups in the first round of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior draft Saturday at the Royal York Hotel He was the 13th player chosen and one of only two rewrote the record books over the weekend during the annual Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Associations OFSAA track and field championships at Laurentian University Stadium The layearold student of Barrie North Collegiate won three events while setting Canadian Interscholastic mark in the senior boys 400metre hurdles and tying the record in the 110 metre hurdles Forgrave also won the 400metres event in the twoday finals which attracted 1800 athletes from 670 schools from across the province Eastview Secondary School won the senior girls champion ship with 30 points and finished third overall behind Agincourt and North Toronto which tied for first place with 40 points Five Canadian Interscholastic marks and 18 allOntario records fell at the 3lst OFSAA championships Winning the 400metre hurdles was one highlight of the meet for Forgrave who was recently selected as the outstanding male athlete at North It was something hed trained all season for was confident was going to crack the 400 metres real ly was he said wanted that all year Forgrave set Canadian record with time of 525 seconds in the 400metre hurdles He raced the 110 metres in 144 seconds and won his third event the 400 metres in 476 seconds personal best One big surprise and that was in the 110 metre hurdles didnt really think Id come close to those guys from Toron to he said Forgrave wrapped up the high school track season with an impressive list of records He has accepted track and field scholarship with the University of Minnesota and is currently setting his sights on the Canada Games trials set for Brantford in July Eastview victory Patti Jackman had come close all season in the senior girls javelin but couldnt quite break the hold of teammate Tracy lwitchell She had second in the Georgian Ba Secondary School Association GBSSA finals behind Twitc ells recordsetting toss and second behind the Eastvicw student in the regional finals Her first win was the biggest and most important of the year Jackman hurled the javelin 3974 metres to win the OFSSA championship Twitchell placed third with distance of 3698 metres For Eastview track coach Bob Warner winning the senior step closer to fulfilling his lifelong am bition of being professional hockey player Hamilton Fincups formerly of St Catharines made him their firstround choice and 13th overall in the Ontario Hockey Association Major Junior draft of midget players held at the Royal York Hotel Toronto Saturday Other Barrie players picked were John Garner of the Junior Colts and Jim Cox Both went to Niagara Falls Flyers Fincups needed centreman which is why they went after 15 yearold Shedden They are losing three centremen including high scoring Dale McCourt who is expected to be one of the top pickshin the National Hockey League NHL draft later this mont They still have their goaltender and defencemen from last year but they needed centremen Shedden said The manager said he wanted me to be another McCourt and lead them to couple of Memorial Cups There is bound to be some pressure put on Shedden to produce in his first year He was one of only two underage midget players to go in the first round The other one was Wayne Gret sky who was with the Toronto Nationals who went to the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds Im not looking for anything spectacular in my first year the examlner Monday June 1977 heard from number of the teams prior to the draft but had no idea Hamilton were interested in him We were just getting ready to go out the door Saturday mor ning when got phone call he said They called and asked when thought would go in the draft and if was interested in playing for them and then the guy just hung up Im really happy to go to Hamilton and well be playing in new arena this year The other arena the Hamilton Forum was banned last year which is whythe team moved to St Catharines while the new one was being built Shedden was minor midget this year so Hamilton has to sign and play him certain amount of time They cant send him down to their Junior affiliate club unless he agrees to the move plan to keep in shape this summer by golfing lifting weights riding bike and playing baseball Shedden said think their training camp starts sometime around the first of September There were 230 players drafted Junior clubs pay up to $1500 for midget age player taken from Provincial Junior team and $500 if player was with midget club Shedden said hope to play lot and do the best can Coach knew hed go high in draft Gerry Daniels coach of the CoOp Midgets had no doubts that Shedden would go in the first round of the Junior draft was sure he would go in the first round because so many teams were interested in taking him in the second round Daniels said Theres lot of dickering at Junior draft There were lot of teams in touch with me about Doug but never hearcd anything from Hamilton though Daniels doesnt think he will have any trouble if he works hard and gives it his best shot wish him lot of luck He has lot of drive and desire and thats what you must have to make it he said Shedden won the Most Valuable Player award for the CoOp Midgets last year picking up 125 points including 50 goals He was the driving force behind our team last year and he deserved to win the award Daniels said Daniels had good year at the reins of the CoOps but has decided to give up his duties and go into retirement Im retiring from coaching but plan to be on the ex ecutive he said have three boys of my own playing hockey and its just too hectic to follow them and the CoOps around the country Its just not fair to coach the team if you arent going to put everything into it he said You have to travel lot so you can go to the best tournaments so the scouts see the players Todd 010 record in which they scored on ly two touchdowns Many of the faces were the same but it was the attitude that had changed during the winter The cheering started at the first of the game and con Cats had chance to get back into the game late in the first half but an intercep tion by Allinson put an end to any thoughts of that and Orillia went to the dressing room with 120 halftime lead The defence was one of the areas coach Burns was con cerned with prior to the start of the season but any worries were quickly dismissed by the fine showing in the first half The defence only allowed North Bay to get by midfield once in the first half The defence was just super during the whole ball game Burns said They kept giving us the ball with good field posi tion and all the offence had to do was put it in the end zone was pleased with the way everyone gave 100 percent when they were on the field and if you get the best effort out of all the ball players youre going to win your share of games Allinson scored his second touchdown of the game early in the second half Steve Robillard intercepted pass and passed it back to him and he raced in Mayhew got his second touchdown with 332 seconds left in the third quarter and Alex Mowat added the convert to give them lopsided 250 Mowat added field goal later in the game to make the score 280 before North Bay got their only touchdown of
