the examiner Frlday April 29 1977 farIn Their polled Hereford farm specializes in purebreds only class operation in the Beeton area By BRIAN BAKER BEETON lt is pleasant to visit beef farm where everything has wellkept ap pearance and looks as if some one really cares Just such farm is the fatherandson purebred polled Hereford farm of Tom Somers and son Tom Jr who on their Beetonarea farms keep some 175 head of cattle Unlike most beef farmers who must rely on the slaughter cattle market the Somers sell their heifers and most of the bulls at special purebred sales to buyers throughout Ontario the West and Quebec where there is generally strong market for choice breeding stock The Somers have the opera tion divided into three phases with the cows in one barn the calves in another and heifers in another Two barns are new openfront pole barns for the cows and for the heifers while converted conventional two storeybarn with part of the south founda tion wall removed serves equal ly well for the calves and young bulls This means that the temperature within the barns is the same as outside The barns are designed merely to give protection against wind snow and rain IT WORKS The moment you start to close barn up too much you run into the problem of conden sation which in turn leads to respiratory ailments in the cat tle emphasized Somers Sr This winter has been one of the coldest and yet our cattle have never been so healthy done so well or been so free from colds Keeping the barn tem perature as near as possible to the outside temperature results in healthier calves tankers are between 400000 and 500000 tons and most of the 4500 tanklt ers now in service are in the 80000ton range But Geo graphic notes there are at least 575 tankers which are 160000 tons or larger and the demand for crude oil has pushed up the size of the ships that carry it One oil company executive estimates that shipping costs between the Middle East and the United States are cut by 30 per cent when the crude is ship ped in 250000t0n rather than 7500Hon tankers PATlos ll KNR lllfltASlUNll can stand up to the steel treads of army tanks and survivi stlll zero temperatures or searing heat Moreover the animals keep much cleaner and require far less bedding They also have better appetites Their cattle are lar ely kept in concrete yards an grassed exercise fields and the feed is brought to them and fed in yard mangers where wastage is reduced to minimum The main part of the 450 acres of farmland is reserved for growing grain corn for en silage and hay for dry roughage feeding The corn is cut green in the fall and blown into two big trench silos with capacities of hundreds of tons From these the corn can be unloaded by tractor and front end loader and fed directly to the cattle or they can feed themselves through steel gates which as they cat back into the face of the ensilage can he slid forward on steel tracks Thus no actual manual effort is re quired TOPGRADE HAY Special attention is paid by the Somers to the making of top quality hay including trefoil alfalfa and red clover which combine high protein with high energy values The hay is cut with win drower conditioner resulting in hay that looks almost as green as the original crop only dry and sweet smelling Hay is fed through overhead chutes into mangers below re quiring minimum of labor The grainrolled mixed grainis also fed down into the manger from the floor above in the conventional barn Whether it is hay ensilage or grain the cattle get all they want for the Somers believe that the fastest weight and growth gains possible are the most efficient If the cattle do Not clear up all the grain one day they feed out little less the next day To promote good bone growth as well as assure that feeds are they want even in subzero weather HERD SIZE On the average they keep about 80 cows 60 or 70 heifers and varying number of calves and young bulls Heifers zue bred at about 18 months of age but if they have good size and growth as early as 16 months ldeally the Somers aim for an average of one calf per cow per year Last year only two cows fail ed to raise call but since two other cows in the herd had twins the alfpeiecow rate stood at an excellent 100 per cent All were bred to natural service In this business you cant af ford to lose calves remarks Somers If you lose one call you have lost the production of one cow for an entire year and yet you still have the cost of keeping that cow When it comes to finishing any surplus bulls as steers for the slaughter market am sorry to say it is more pro fitable to sell the feed hay they would eat for horse feed They like to have the young stock reach an average weight of 1000 pounds by the time they reach the yearling class They want them to have good solid growth without being fat purebred cowcalf opera tion is like any other type of far ming today There is no room for mistakes stresses Somers Also you should never stop looking for new angles
