14 the oxamlner Thursday April 28 1977 Sports corner Tardy sports hurting Games By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Each morning Bob Baker waits for the morning mail to be dropped on his desk hoping that it will bring him some good news Baker is the executive director of the Greater Huronia Sports Council GHSC which is attempting to put together the first packaged Summer Games in Huronia What he is waiting for are the completed registration forms from the sports which indicated an interest in par ticipating in the July games Baker is losing his patience as the May deadline for en try creeps into the picture Theyve been given cover month now to et them in As of today Wednesday only one has come in said That one sport is cricket Baker is still waiting to hear from lacrosse soccer cycling mens fastball and an equestrian club those are the ones were pretty well sure of He hasnt heard anything from track and field tennis and few other sports he expected to jump at chance to par ticipate in the Huronia Summer Games Lacrosse has indicated that it will be holding number of tournaments in the area as part of the Summer Games Cricket is in Orillia for its program Whats troubling Baker is the pressure the holdouts are putting on the Games Committee Hes extended the deadline by two weeks to May 16 Were all set to go but were not getting any response Baker said the Games Committee has got to know now where the sports stand He is presently interviewing number of students from Barrie for the job of assistant coordinator for the Games Baker said he had narrowed the candidates down to five but was having trouble selecting his assistant Baker stated that the GHSC has to know now which sport is in and which is not to help plan the structure of the Games Such things as arranging facilities advertising promotion are handcuffed by this reluctance on the part of the sports to send in their registration forms He said there was still an opening for such sports as water skiing and sailing if someone is willing to step forth and handle the activity PROGRAM 50A EXPERIENCE 77 Recreation for Women is coming back to the Barrie area as are the two university students who got the project off the ground last summer Sadie VanBeest Creemore and Judie Perkin of Barrie have returned to pick up where they left off last year and that was the promotion of women in sports They begin work May 24 Were very pleased theyre both coming back where they left off Baker said Both are graduating this year in physical education related courses Sadie is graduating from Hamiltons McMaster University with Judie finishing her final year at Guelph Baker said the pair would probably do more programs this summer in an effort to get things going for women in sports in the area They would probably look after the sports involving women in the Huronia Summer Games The two were responsible for organizing the Simcoe Coun ty Womens Volleyball League which completed suc cessful program last month Were looking forward to some good things happening this summer added Baker GIANtING ItLNIDoug Ault continues to swing mighty bat with the Toronto Blue Jays He homered Wednesday against the difference in the world for Eastview Secondary School Those few points were worth firstplace finish and avoided tussle with Barrie North Col legiate Eastview collected 338 points to win the overall team championship at the Eastview Wildcat Invitational Track and Field meet on Tuesday Third place with 34 points went to Barrie Central Col legiate There was slight mixup at the end of the meet which was clarified often when organizers had time to catch their breath and go over the results Barrie North boys were awarded pla ue honoring their performance as the overall winners of boys division Theyll now have to give it back as later check revealed that Barrie Central was the winner The complication settled around the athletes who entered the meet just to test themselves and for timing purposes These entries had their placings tabulated in the point standings which led to an incorrect list of standings in the overall girls and boys divisions The only thing tht didnt change was the overall stan dings amon the three schools entered Although closer Eastview sti came out on top Points were awarded to the top six placers in each event starting with 10 points and working down to one point Lynn Sessor helped Eastviews showing with firstplace finish in the senior girls 100 and 200metre sprints Kim Holden was another ouble winner for Eastview with firsts in the junior girls hurdles and long jump events Holden also earned second in the junior girls 100 metres The Sega brothers of Marty and Brian proved their pro wess in the hi gh jump event Brian won the junior boys event with
