the oxamlnar ruosday Aprll19 1977 AA meeting memories of drink EVERYD Please Lord Teach us to laugh again But God dont let us ever forget we cried Over 350 members of Alcoholics Anonymous from Canada and the United States didnt let themselves forget Saturday at an intergroup ses sion held in Barrie They came from as far away as West Virginia to Barries Continental Inn and they shared experiences during three panel discussions and open meeting and talkathon youth panel sitting at 1030 am revealed their problems along with the fact alcoholism isnt disease restricted to any one age young girl from Welland was drug addict and an alcoholic when she went to AA for the first time she said And she had misconceptions about what AA could do for her When came in thought my life was going to be peaches and cream she said floated for the first year Then she found it harder My sponsors told me the first year was gift and they were right she said After that you have to work at it She was in grade 12 and look ing for job when whe was an alcoholic she said and she was constantly afraid someone would find out about her pro blem But somethingjust kept tell ing me to hang on she said She slipped and started going to hotels again at night until she faced the fact she was going downhill she said looked at drink had ordered and realich had to weigh what wanted most What wanted was to have the things the other people around me had but then had to think did want to go back on the street or did want to stay sober she said got out of there really fast She said she needed the understanding and objectivity an AA sponsor can provide had lot of problems with my parents she said They never knew they just never knew what was going through They were too emotionally involved with me Her relations with them have improved did get close to them and they try and help me any way they can used to always be running away but now have place of my own and Im my own person And never leave from visiting them without care package Theyve shown great understanding She credits the persistence of other AA members with her ability to stay sober Anything have today is on ly through this program she said had people behind me pushing One young man on the panel said he came into Alcoholics Alcoholic Noll say most There are about 300 admitted alcoholics in Barrie says one member of the chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous And there are many more who wont admit it he says About one in 20 admit they have drinking problem he said The problem is that all people are at different stages of alcoholism and its hard to identify those stages Those who admit they have problem attend some of the 14 meetings week two each night that the Barrie AA chapter holds and they get sup port from others with the same problem One organizer of Saturdays AA intergroup session held at the Continental Inn in Barrie says AA people are always there when you need them It didnt matter when phoned he said Whenever needed them they came He said he tumed to the AA after going to others for help was drinking socially from the time was 25 to the time was 35 he said And from 35 on it kept get ting worse Once tried to quit and found had trouble staying away fromit He said his attempt during Lent was turning point just couldnt stay sober he said From then on it was just struggle He turned to doctors and psychiatrists for help and couldnt find what he needed The only time was conr fortable was when went to AA he said couldnt be honest with the doctors he said was always afraid they were turn ing their noses up at me But at AA the people had the same problem had the same fears the same remorse and the same setbacks Acoholism is misunderstood illnesshesaid There is no age barrier he said Some are coming in now when theyre 15 or 16 The face of AA is changing It used to be person would have to nearly drink themselt to death before theyd come in and theyd be over 40 by their hesaid Now theyrc catcliing the problem at younger ages Alcoholics arent all skid row bums he said Four per cent of alcoholics are the skid row type he said but the other siti per cent are drinking in their own home Anyone who feels the need for drink at certain time is an alcoholic Alcoholism is disease recognized by American Medical Association as an allergy of the body and an obsscssion of the mind he said Because of the amount of work done by the Incdia pmplc are becoming aware that what is wrong with them isnt bad nerves its alcoholic nerves he said People who drink he said suffer from lows as intense as the Iiiin they get from alcohol It brings you down with crash he said The mood swings are really terrible There is no rule saying how must person must drink before they are classed as alocholics he said You can be an alcoholic on two drinks he said If youve got to have it and you cant hair dlc it youre an alcoholic time someone decides to ap proach AA he said they are given sponsor who helps them Anonymous for all the wrong reasons came in to get my wife off my back he said My first contact with the AA was when called them at Elm one Friday night and made contact with sponsor Then Saturday and Sunday went by and was still sober so decided Id celebrate with drink he said So just had the glass filled to the top when the phone rang he said It was my sponsor They say the AA screws up your drinking really fast and it certainly does Both his father and his fatherinIaw had alcoholic pro blems said the man For long time my wife wouldnt ad mit was an alcoholic because of her father Once he came to AA he said he spent most of his time trying to think of excuses to leave Im still here never came up with good enough one He says he doesnt believe in social drinking any more cant see
