just few months ago that the executive of the Junior Hockey Club invited the media to gettogether to for mally announce plans for the upcoming season in the Mid Ontario Junior Hockey League The club officially wrapped up the 197677 season with its an nual awards night Wednesday Topping the list of award winners was Bob Coulson The Colts captain claimed the teams scoring trophy and was selected as the clubs valuable player Brad MacDonald was the unanimous choice as rookie of the year Coulson finished the season with 28 goals and 26 assists for 54 points He was the sparkplug of the Colts offence with the knack of making things happen when he was on the ice MacDonald in his first season with the Colts notched 14 goals and 13 assists He was persistent worker for Barrie Colts felt his absence when the forward was knocked out of the playoffs with knee injury It was not the kind of year the Colts expected They didnt match their preseason expectations finishing fourth and hav ing to meet the firstplace Oak Ridge Dynes Jewellers in the first round of the playoffs Oak Ridge knocked Barrie out in four straight games enroute to the league championship The year witnessed playercoaching changes Late in November the club replaced Don Crowe and Don Martin with Lorne Knowles did enjoy the year quite truthfully Knowles said He told the executive and players that he would have enjoyed better finish but overall considered it successful season from his point If things turn out and happen to be back again next year hope to have better season Knowles said Bill Hake president of the Otilts organization thought the club gave it good shot wish we could have gone little farther but all in all it was pretty good year There was sad moment to the evening Jack Garner direc tor of public Barrie He was very dear friend and great supporter of our club Garner said lim Short announced his intention to step down as manager of the Barrie Colts Junior Hockey Club Wednesday Short com pleted his second term with the olts and was instrumental in turning the olts organization into first class operation Short leaving managers role Jim Short is leaving the Barrie Colts Junior Hockey Club Short announced his intent ion to step down as manager of the club Wednesday at the annual awards night celebrations Short longtime supporter of hockey in Barrie just finished his second term as manager of the Colts He told the players he was giving up the role of manager because he felt he could no longer give it the attention it needs He said he couldnt give the job 100 per cent of his time anymore and shouldnt do it if he couldnt devote the proper amount of energy the role calls for Short played an instrumental role in establishing the Colts organizations as first class operation Im quite happy to be part of it and wish it all the best in the future Short said When we first started the season we had great expecta tionsWe didnt do quite as well maybe thought we would lie applauded the efforts of Knowles who stepped in to the coaching shoes at difficult time You have to give Lorne Knowles lot of credit for stepping in when hedid Short said adding that at the time it was felt change had to be madeand was Short said Knowles deserves another crack next year Short has noticed in his two years in the Junior hockey league system with Barrie that each year brings with it great change over of players In Junior Hockey you go many ways Year to year the team changes 50 per cent he said You cant depend on the same players year after year Short mentioned that one of the responsibiities or objectives of the hockey club was to help players wishing to go on to col lege on hockey scholarships We hope from the executive level that weve helped you loulson extended the
