10 the examiner Tuesday Apr12 1977 If orner Senior draft By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Six weeks is all the break the executive of the Barrie Flyers Senior Hockey Club gets before work begins on new season Weve got number of things on the go that weve got to clean up like our trip draw outlined Flyers general manager Steve Cripps Cripps and the rest of the Flyers executive have head start on next season thanks to the Brantford Alexanders Brantford eliminated Barrie Friday to win the Ontario Hockey Association Senior League championshi and the right to meet Woodstock Royals to determine whic club ad vances to the Eastern Canadian championships Alexanders open bestofseven series with Woodstock winners of the Continental Senior League in Brantford tonight The first weekend in June is something ecial for the Senior League this year its the weekend to league will hold its first ever draft of overage major junior and tier two junior hockey players Each team has list of over 160 players coming out of the junior ranks this season Each club is allowed to put 15 names on protected list noted Jim Lemicux league con vener Lastplace finishersLindsay Lancers that is if they stay in the leagucl get first pick working up to the firstplace Thunder Bay Twins Flyers have fourth choice as iesult of finishing fifth this season Each clubwvill have to come up with their own scouting reports explained Lemieux in telephone interview from his home lll Midland The hockey market is bleak onc Each season more good hockey players find themselves out of work The pro ranks are feeling tightening of the purse strings with both the NHL and lllA watching franchises fall by the wayside In the past few years lot of kids whove gone away to pro camp and have been cut had no place to go stated Lemieux Now the kids coming out of Junior know that if they dont make the pros they have another avenuethey ktiow that they re wanted team must send registered letter to each player it drafts inviting him to training camp whether he goes on to pro camp or not That way player will still have an option should he be cut The whole draft concept is gentlcmens agreement among the clubs involved Lcmieux said The DNA in no way can get involvul Lemicux said the eight owners thcre could be morei will draw up an agrmment among themselves which he will en dorse as league convcner This will be legal document with fines as stiff as $10m tor tampering with other clubs draft choices in other words the Senior League will have to police itself They 11 make it tough enough that dont think anybody will tamper with anybody else Lemieux said Lemieiix feels the draft will benefit both the Senior loop and the good hockey players who might otherwise end up without home for the winter Based on what saw Friday night in Branttord its com parable to lot of pro hockey right now Lemicux said of the calibre of hockey in the league Next year Youre going to see 2130 per cent improvt ment next year he predicted Any club who sits pat on what it has now is going to be left behind Lcmicux indicated that there is strong possibility that Sudbury may enter the league next season There have been rumors that Lindsay may fold and move to Bellcvillc that Napanee is coming back froin oncycar leave of abscncc and that London is interested in entering club in the HA Senior League The annual meeting on April 50 should provide the answers to lot of questions The fact that the Flycrs were rudely knocked from their roost at the topof the league by new team is testimonial enough on the growth this season of the Senior League Alexanders returned to the league after brief absence to roar through the playoffs cnroutc to the arling up in way they can thank the Flyers for giving them the edge in the series Flycrs had chance to bump Brantford out of home ice advantage back on Feb 20 in the final game of the schedule against the lowly Lindsay Lancers All Barrie had to do was heat the Lancers and fourthplacc ford Flycrs lost and thc jockeying for position eventually caught up with them when Brantford took the league title in the seventh game on home ice The team iced by the Barrie Flycrs this season when it finally started to come together was good one Some fch the best Barrie has had The lcxandcrs were no slouch either Torby Adams should know he played with Barrie for 12 eventful seasons betorc ending up wit the Alexanders this season This is the best team Ive played for with its original players commented Adams moments after his club left the ice Friday 3500 richcr anti hundred times happier Perhaps this season more than other the Senior Leagui left the realm of working mans league into that of big business Senior hokcey is not hobby anymore Senior hockey is big business He said that the Barrie Flycrs organimtion probably has bigger overhead than lot of small businesses in the ci tytry $130000 season Flycrs forked out lot of loot this year They helped in renovating of the upstairs of the Barrie Arena plus outfitting the players in new uniforms not to mctnion players fccs Despite the outlay Tripps was optimistic that the club would keep its financial head over water He said the Flyers were already starting to work on some key players for next season We were very pleased with the calibre of hockey player we had this season He felt that with few breaks the Flyers
