14 the examiner Thursday Aprll 1971 Sports corner Carling Cup is the prize By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Work One little but meaningful word You didnt hear it used much in the Flyers dressing room after the 74 win over Brantford Tuesday but it was the main reason why Barrie is in Brantford Friday for the championship game of the Senior League in stead of packing away gear for next year Playing coach Darryl Sly uttered the word when asked what he thought the Flyers had to do to beat the Alexanders on their home ice They havent done yet in three games of the league final Few feel confident enough to stretch themselves thin enough to predict the outcomeof the final game These allornothing games have habit of being totally un redictable What should happen just doesnt All it takes is ad call missed check sloppy pass to give club the winn ing edge That is if the game is close which will probably be the case In all likelihood Fridays game will be cautious one with neither club willing to gamble on making costly mistake Goaltending and strong defence will play major role in the outcome of the deciding game Both Ernie Miller of the Flycrs and Alcxanders Gerry Gray have shown theyre quite capable of coming up wit the big saves Flycrs have been whipped by leaving loose pucks in front of Miller at the mercy of flailing Brantford sticks This baloney about home ice advantage being the key in the series is just thatMbaloncy Flycrs have proven they can beat Brantford at home during the regular schedule Theyve had three games in Brantford in the final so they should know the ins and otits of the larger ice surface Flyers havent played well in Brantford They havent been able to put together three decent periods of hockey Its that Simple Flycrs captain Wayne Carleton feels the layoff between games hasnt helped either club This coupled with the letdown after highscoring win has helped to prolong the series Carleton didnt think the games would have been as lopstded 121 T1 +3 115 61 74 had they been played closer together Alexanders appear to have mastered the technique of spr inging winger free It killed the Flyeis in Brantford Sunday and had it not been for Miller in the third period Tuesday could have led to champagne party by the Alexanders It puts the pressure on the Flyers defence They played what we call road gamethrow it in and go after it said Steve Sly cur rently in his fifth season on defence with Barrie John Gofton nearly broke free on number of occasions for Brantford on this quckbrcak style of offence He did manage to split the Flycrs defence for shot at Miller in the second period which was stopped Moments later he was seen splitting for the Barrie net with Brantford defender attemp ting to bloop the puck out in front of him They throw it in then chase it going for the breaks Sly eit plained Sly found himself involved in number of footraccs for puck slidingintothe Barriecnd Sly 27 knows the Brantford rink He played his junior hockey there before joining Montreal Loyolas college hockey club He is the younger brother of the playing coach anti has proven himself one of the better puck carrying defencemcn in the league Hes no newcomer to playoff pressure bill this series has him baffled cant explain this series Ive never played in series like this before he said The ollingwood resident is predicting really tough seventh game Lets face it Neither club can afford to open up Flych used five tiefcncemen Tuesday with Jack Smith in strumental in keeping Brantford off Millers doorstep Smith didnt play Sunday in Brantford And he was missed Hes pretty aggressive noted Sly he takes the man out in front of the net its hell of hole to fill when hes not there Another thing adding to the unpredictability of the series has been the work of Brantfords playing coach John MacMillan and the host of exFlycrs now with the Alexanders Theyre well versed in the Flyers style of play Steve Sly expects Brantford to be tough at home when they get on big pond like that they throw the disc around lot more he said One pleasing note was the perfonnanct of arleton Les Burgess and Gary Lyle against the Alexanders Tuesday That line counted six of the seven Barrie goals arlcton had two goals and four assists in the game Burgess got two goals to snap dry spell in the playoffs Hes had his chances but been miffed of late They stared going in Tuesday If we can jump out anti get couple goals Friday it will make it awful interesting commented Burgess after Tucs days win An added incentive Friday will be the appearance of the Tari ing OKeefe Cup John Prentice Ontario supervisor of promo tion for Carling OKeefe Breweries is expected to attend the final game Hell have the sterling silver cup with him and cheque for $500 Winning team also receives jackets and duffel bags courtesy of Carling OKeefc The winner of the Senior loop will be heading down the Allan Cup trail outfitted and looking like pro club GLANCING
