conserve elec tricity or live With blackouts says Bill Elson oi the Public Utilities Commissmn PUC They and other Ontario reSldents are facing very serious Situation Mr Elson secretary treasurer of the PUC said peo ple have been spoiled over the years by an abundance of hydro power Suddenly everything has turned around he said One day were promoting electricity for everything and now were telling people to conserve When power was abundant he said people learned lot of bad habits which waste elec tricity little bit here and little bit there That all adds up to lot he said People wont realize how bad the Situation IS until they experience blackout Mr Elson said Ontario Hydro can not keep up to the demand for electrictty The problem he said is not generating power but finding money to build new plants needed to meet the annual seven per cent increase in demand The technology IS there he said But the crunch is really finding the tunds It takes huge amounts 01 money to buud the necessary plants Electricuy he said is sutler ing similar problems as other fuels increasing demand With shorter supplies forcing higher prices Ontario Hydro reached an all time record peak Dec 13 with demand for 15939000 kilowatts of power The figure exceeded the December 1975 peak by 98 per cent ln Barrie the demand reach ed 66000 kilowatts on Dec 13 which was short of the all time record peak ol 71500 kilowatts in February The city has capacity of about 85000 kilowatts of power Mr Elson said effective Jan the 13000 residential com merCial and industrial hydro users were paying about 237 per cent more for electriCity PROBLEMS This could create some pro blems he said because people trying to conserve will not lind any substantial decrease in electric bills next year lt creates quite paradox he said Were telling people to save electricity but they wont be saving any money on their bills Mr Elson said this is one of the things which are going to hurt us The PUC has two sets of ratesone for residential and the other for general commer ctal and industrial customers increases based on monthly use are approved by Ontario Hydro New residential rates are tor the first 50 kilowatt hours month eight cents kilowatt hour from 63 cents the next 200 kilowatt hours month four cents kilowatt hour from 35 cents and for the balance 23 cents kilowatt hour from 18 cents Average residential use is between 750 and 1000 kilowatt hours of power month kilowatt hour is equal to us ing 10 loowatt light bulbs for one hour New general user rates are for the first 50 kilowatt hours month eight cents kilowatt hour from 63 cents lor the next 200 kilowatt hours month four cents kilowatt hour from 35 cents for the next 9750 kilowatt hours month four cents kilowatt hour from 35 cents
