members of the founding board of governors Mr ruwford said it was not an easy time for college of ficials SIGNED NOTE As work was being done he said George Mctzigue first chairman of the board of gover nors had to sign fora loan at il local bank to cover the ex ATSUN pcnses until government fun dingwasavailable The bank manager had some reservations about the whole thing because he had never heard of the college he said Even the temporary location was headache he said be cause of renovations To our horror we found that one of the stores had never been occupied and still had dirt floor he said It was primitive in other ways too but this was the piece de re sistance During the years the college has rogressed with the first buil ing started July 16 1968 and completed by Oct Buildings continued to go up at the Barrie site while enrol ment in the college grew From the humble start of 112 fulltime students and 247 students in extension courses or threeyear programs 1500 fulltime adult training pro gram students and 12000 others in the variety of continu ing education programs last year In our philosophy it wa recognized that parttime lear ning must be equally important as traditional fulltime educa tion Mr Crawford said This year William Caldwell prssident of Moldex Ltd in Bar rie was elected chairman of the board At the first of series of tenth anniversary ceremonies Feb Mr McCague was honored and made Fellow of Georgian College Mr McCague was the second person in 10 years to be made fellow The first was Premier William Davis for his contribu tion as minister of education time education with more flex ibility for students There will be greater tendency to take education to the communities he said If the open college concept can be effective anywhere in this pro vince it could be so in this region Mr Crawford said Georgian should be able to respond to the needs of society in the future and not be tied to pattern set 10 or 15 years ago He said Ontario colleges started in an adventurous and colorful way but are now 10 yearsold The colleges are in danger of losing their vitality he said unless they look for new routes Our planning for the second decade is being carried out to create objectives that will deal with the concerns of the present and the future and not those of the past he said there were 1600 fulltime Mr Crawford said the college
