Blood donations down Barrie and district branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society raised total of 2437 units of blood at five blood donor clinics in 1970 down 134 units from the previous year Fraser director of the regional assessment office in Barrie says directions on what steps to take in an appeal are on the back of every assessment notice Speaking at local govern ment seminar on of llaliburton repeater station which was part of the broad casting system of liarries TK VIiTV Channel 31 The station had been broad casting CKVlt programming to llaliburton area residents until Nov when operation ceased after the companys lease on the transmitter site property expired CKVlt told the commission the llaliburton area was receiving adequate service directly from the Barrie tran smitter as the result of significant increase in the height of the transmitter in January 1074 and there was no need to resume repeater ser vice in new location The Cltl accepted the CK Vlt argument says only quarter of appeals get to an assessment board There are usually 1400 ap peals year on assessment notices and only four appeals get to the board he said Can afford to lose volunteers Red Cross must rekindle its interest cent since there are areas where we are less than strong Mrs McNamara noted that 90 per cent of lted Cross work is done by volunteers but we are in danger of taking McGOVERN Examiner Staff Writer Smaller lots are the key to cheaper housing says Eric Bergman president of the Housing and Urban Develop ment Association of Canada Bergman Winnipeg buil der told members of the Barrie and District Builders Association that the single detached house is still the most desirable type of ac commtxiation We can reduce its costs by reducing the size of the lot and the house if municipal ities will give us the go ahead hesaid But he added getting the goahead would need change in the municipal politicians infatuation with large buildinglots At the turn of the century 2500 square foot lot was considered the affordable house he said and it can be again But the house does not have to be square box it can be pleasing he add ed We must at the local level convince our politigt cians and those people who are already homeowners that we owe it to society to provide housing that is af fordable for our own young families IlIISlIlltTIONS Bergman said
