The Market Place Wednesdfl March 1977 Automatic shutoff on microwave oven Are microwave ovens safe Controversy continues over whether or not microwaves cause cancer create cataracts and whether or not you can taste the difference in the food What does the law say The health protection branch of the department of national health and welfare has listed some regulations regarding design and function of the microwave oven Among law requirements are double set of interlock switches on the door mechanism and if the interlock fails the power automatically shuts off Also the standard for emission of rays at any point five centimetres from the oven surface is set at one milliwatt per square centimetre We are exposed to 500 milliwats per square centimetre of visible light from the sun with no ill effects In bulletin the health protection branch said Microwave ovens are con sidered entire harmless if the oven doesnt leak radiation and the microwave generation is switched off automatically when the door is opened But if door seals are not tight or the interlock safety switches are inoperative the oven can be hazardous Ovens now have an automatic switchoff says Susan Borden Consumers Gas home economist This makes it impossible to operate the oven with the door open And con trary to what some people think the rays dont stay in the food But the consumer can be his own worst enemy when operating microwave oven They wont read the manual Mrs Borden says Some dos for the consumer in clude read the manual have the oven checked for leakage every two years or once year if used very often and keep the door seals clean with wash cloth Some donts for consumers dont operate the oven if damaged dont use metal cook ware Use only the cookware advised by the manufacturer dont run the oven when it is empty dont insert objects such as forks through the viewing screen or between door and door seal dont tamper with buttons or pins associated with door hinges orlatches Dont miss breakfast
