Sheridan volleyball coach resigns Dave McAllister has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Sheridan College men's volleyball program. Former Bruins player Frank Pento will inherit McAllister's position, Sheridan announced yesterday (Thursday). "Stepping down from the Sheridan men's volleyball team at this time will allow me an opportunity to not only pursue other interests but to spend more time with family," McAllister said. "I am pleased to know that the reins are being handed over to a former player and a Sheridan alumnus whose energy and enthusiasm for volleyball will serve the team well." McAllister became the Bruins head coach prior to the 2010-11 season and helped to turn around a program that had fallen on hard times. In his rst season at the helm, he guided the Bruins to a 20-7 record (15-3 in conference play) and guided them back to the OCAA championship tournament for the rst time since 1994, when they won their nal of six straight OCAA titles. That stellar rst season earned McAllister the OCAA West Coach of the Year award and he was also the OCAA nominee for CCAA National Coach of the Year. Over his ve seasons, McAllister racked up a 101-70 record overall and a 54-36 record during the regular season. His 54 wins in OCAA conference play over that stretch were more than the program had compiled in its previous 13 seasons of competition combined, dating back to the 1994-95 campaign. Pento was a ve-year player for Sheridan and is a graduate of the school's business administration - human resources program. He was named Sheridan's male athlete of the year in 2011-12 and was the inaugural winner of the Rob Till Award, given annually to the Sheridan student-athlete that shows great leadership skills and makes a tremendous contribution to the Sheridan community at large. "I will strongly base our style of play on defence and execution," Pento said. "Moving forward with the program it's going to be a lot of recruiting -- although we're a little behind with this class -- but we should have a nice core group back from this year and that should hopefully help us hit the ground running."
