GRAFTON AULD KIRK MEMBERS SEEK POSESSION GF CHURCH PROPERTY Old Buildinq Erected by Presbyterians in 1844 Named in Writ at Osgoode Hall-- Original Plot of Ground Set Aside for Five Shillings, Specifying Westminster Confession of Faith. Possession of the church property and manse used since 1844 and 1850, respectively, by the Presbyterian congregation of Grafton, Ontario, is sought in a writ issued at Osgoode Hall by John W. Aird on his own behalf and on behalf of all other' mem-lers of the congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada at Grafton. The writ runs against William H. Johnston and J. C. Hutchinson of Grafton and John Underwood of Hal-dimand Township, Northumberland County. The writ sets forth that in 1844 John Grover "for and in consideration of five shillings to him and in hand," conveyed to trustees "for the site of a church and burying ground for the use of a congregation of Presbyterians whose ministers, elders and members make the confession of faitl^>asli -opted by the assembly of Dlnnes m? Westminster commonly called a"nd known as the Westminster Confession of Faith, the rule by which public worship and divine service is to be conducted in the church built or to be built upon the premises thereby conveyed." The trust deed reserved to John Crover and his heirs and assigns forever the family burial plot of 121 square yards and pew number 9 in the church. The manse and plot was conveyed in 1850 by Hon. George Strange Boul-ton to the said trustees and their successors to be appointed in the same, manner as those in the deed from John Grover. The original memorials have been transcribed and have been filed with the' writ. S. I. Wilson as convenor. According to the previous arrangement, this Presbytery included all the pastoral charges in the Counties of Northumberland and Durham and the south half of Ontario County. After two years' experience it was found that this area was altogether too large for effective operation, so at the last session of the Bay of Quinte Conference held at Oshawa, it was divided at a point between Welcome and New-tonville, the west section to be known as Oshawa Presbytery and the east as Cobourg Presbytery. At the meeeting at Norham, Rev. J. S. I. Wilson was elected Chairman, Rev. J. G. McKee, Secretary, and Rev. C. D. Daniel, Treasurer. Revs. Wilson and F. W. Anderson were appointed as representatives on the Conference Settlement Committee, and Revs. J. E. Beckel, and H. B. Neal, as memibers of the Conference Committee on Religious Education. Rev. C. W. Demille, President of Conference, Mr. H. W. Ackerman of Belleville, and Rev. Alfred Gandier of Toronto were present and addressed the Presbytery. Arrangements were made wherebv Rev. G. A. Wfilliams of Formosa and A. W. Lockhead of Honan, China, will address a series of meetings throughout the Presbytery during the next In the evening a banquet was served by the Norham ladies, after which Dr. Gandier gave a very fine address on his recent visit to China, Korea and The next meeting of Presbytery will be heid at Grafton in November.
