IEIwoih language Incidents of human flesh being consud uy fell humans to sustain life are well recorded Marooned sailors bush pilots and surviving victims of plane crashes have all forced themselves to eat human flesh in order to survive North American Indians and some African tribes ate portions of their fallen enemies as an act of respect in the belief that they would acquire some of the admirable qualities of their former foes Those cases where cannibalism is practised for the sheer perverted pleasure of the act are much rarer In the 20th century the case most often referred to as an example of pure cannibalism is the bizarre saga of Albert Fish Help wanted Young man 18 years old wishes position in the country for the summer The ad appeared in the Situations Wanted column of New York City newspaper on Monday May 21 1928 Edward Budd was to regret placingthe ad for the rest of his life The Budd family lived in West 15th St apartment house in what was then the edge of New York City Edward Budd Sr and his wife Delia had four children the oldest being Edward Jr and the youngest Grace 12 Ed Budd had made ups his mind This summer he wouldsscape from the city heat and the city noise He placed the ad for Summer employment in the newspaper Two days after the advertisement appeared an elderly respectable looking man arrived at the Budds door He ex plained to Mrs Budd that he had large vegetable garden operation near Farmingdale Land Island and could use help over the summer months Edward Was enthusiastic deal was struck then and there The elderly gentleman who had introduced himself as Frank Howard would pick Ed ward up the following Thursday or Sunday The Budds in vited Howard to come early on Sunday and have dinner with them The old man promised to try Later in the week the Budd family received telegram advising them that Howard couldnt make it on Thursday but would arrive ear ly on Sunday Sure enough Mr Howard arrived the following Sunday and broke bread with the Budds He said grace and proved to be charming conversationalist At the conclusion of the meal he informed his hosts that he had surprise His sister who lived in New York was having birthday party for her daughter who just happened to be Grace Budds age He was planning on attending and would take Grace along if it was alright with her mother When they returned he and Albert could then leave for the country Mrs Budd was at first apprehensive but with exuberant coaxing by her daughter she finally consented Hand in hand little Grace and one of the most reprehensible monsters who ever lived strolled out of the apartment and in Graces case into obli vron Choked Grace By subway Frank Howard led Grace to Westchester County near Irvington There in ramshackle house called Eisteria Cottage the old man choked the life from the little girl He then dissected his victim and wrapped portion of the body in his bandanna Frank Howard left the house of death and proceeded to his rented room Next day he ate the portion of meat that had once been Grace Budd Every few days the old man would return to Wisteria Cottage Each time he left with parcel which he later consumed Nine days after the murder he made his final trip What remained of Grace Budd was thrown out of window into weed in fested back yard Grace was reported missing The case considered to be kidnapping perpetrated by an old man presented only one clue The missing persons bureau of the New York City Police Force was able to trace the telegram sent to the Budd family This provided them with sample of the kidnappers handwriting but nothing further turned up Years went by and the little girls disappearance was all but forgotten From time to time the Budd family received crank notes and letters which they routinely turned over to the police Six years after the kidnapping one of these letters thought to be from crank proved to have been written by the same hand which had written the old telegram sent to the Budds The contents of the unsigned letter described Grace Budds fate in detail Police were able to trace the writing paper to type used by an organization known as The Private Chauffeurs Benevolent Association janitor for this organization ad mitted taking some of the stationery to his rooming house for his personnel use He told police that he had left some in Albert had liking for children his room at 200 East 52nd St when he had moved out The police proceeded to Room 11 at the janitors former address The landlady gave the police description of the occupant of Room 11 There was no question about it the occupant was Frank Howard who had abducted Grace Budd almost six years previously Cops nabbed him The landlady informed police that Number 11 was often vacant for most of the month but her tenant known to her as Albert Fish always returned to pick up cheque sent to him by son in North Carolina This time when Fish return ed to his room police were waiting for him The mild mannered old man readily confessed to the ab duction murder and consumption of Grace Budd His story was one of perversion which had begun at the age of five when he discovered that he enjoyed pain after being spank ed by teacher Brought up in an orphanage he later mar ried and had several children His wife always considered him strange but lived with him for twenty years before leaving him His grown children later testified that their father often thought he was Christ and from time to time would disappear without explanation Police uncovered the skull and some bones of Grace Budd which had lain where they had been thrown so many years before In the same weeds they found rusty knife and cleaver Fish was examined extensively by both psychiatrists and police It was discovered that he had visited various com munities in the north eastern US at the exact time when young children had been murdered Fish denied any knowledge of these crimes but admitted to leading life of molesting children while he wandered from one job to another usually as house painter Weird case In case as weird as any ever recorded there was still more to come While xraying Fish doctors found 29 metal needles in various parts of his body Some were as large as those used to repair canvas All had been inserted by Fish to cause pain Doctors stated that some of the needles had been in his body for as long as seven years When Fish related his life story to doctors he revealed that over the years he had been in several mental institutions for short periods of time On each occasion he had been released as harmless Albert Fish stood trial for the murder of Grace Budd on March 11 1935 in White Plains NY Despite the efforts put forward by his defense counsel pleading that his client was insane the jury deliberated only few hours before finding Fish guilty of murder Just before being transferred to Sing Sing Fish confessed to four additional murders of small children As the end drew near Fish told his guards that he was delighted at the chance of experiencing the ultimate thrill of being put to death Albert Fish was electrocuted on Jan 16 1936 Funny face no handicap for Thomas OHara
