in power line corridor north of Barrie Ron Mills Alcona may get church BARCLAY Alcona may soon have its first church nd Coun Kathe Jans welcomes it Hiway Pentecostal Church Barrie wants to buy the Alcona Community Centre Its about time Alcona got church said Coun Jans Wednesday The need of church is very great there Almost every town nd village in the area has at least one church she said She rejected suggestion by Reeve William Gibbins that residents be asked their opinion on whether or not the church be allowed to locate in the centre can not see why the public should have any input she said The building was made in to beautiful recreation centre for the residents but no one cared she said She said she would welcome the church because it would eliminate having to send children on buses to Barrie She said now mother and her children would be able to go to church together Grant Andrade deputy reeve said he was not in favor of selling the building and the 42 acres of land it sits on unless the municipality is paid the true value of the site Its got to be straight business deal he said He recommended the church put its requests and plans into writing So far only discussions have been held conservation Heritage Baptists want to lease township centre to run day school By NANCY FIGUEROA Of The Examiner BARCLAY Rev Leroy Pennell Heritage Baptist Church pastor wants to lease the Alcona Community Centre to use as dayschool Mr Pennell told Innisfils committee of the whole Wednesday the church is in need of building for the 197980 school season The school Heritage Christian Academy previously operated from building on the church property However the Supreme Court of Ontario granted June 14 an injunction closing the school The school which had operated smce Sept was ordered closed because it con travened zoning bylaws The church wants to lease the Alcona building from late August to late June said Mr Pennell He said the building would be used Monday to Fri day only and would rarely be used during evenings The church now is looking for land in the township to buld school said Mr lennell He said the Alcona building which was formerly used as school would require few major changes and could easily ac commodae his 50 to 60 students Mr Pennell however isnt the only one interested in the Barrie companies not paid by firm MIDLAND The problems surrounding the town hall here continue with the announce ment that Breyward Construc tion the firm hired to renovate and extend the building has filed for bankruptcy The Newmarket company was awarded $270000 contract last year and sub contracted to number of firms including several from the Barrie area The March blaze at Midlands town hall destroyed the building and terminated the contract An estimated $257000 worth of work was completed at the time of the fire statement from Midlands solicitor Douglas Haig released Tuesday claimed sub contractors were not paid by Breyward Mechanics liens which act as form of security for sub contractors were filed and court action is being taken to get some if not all the money back Mayor Moreland Lynn said he didnt expect the town to lose Innisfil wont rule on course BARCLAY For what Coun Kathe Jans hopes is the last time the controversial human relations course was discussed by Innisfil council Agreeing with recommen dation by Coun Jack Young to take no action on the course for the sixth time Coun Jans said Wednesday she wasnt elected to school board and as such shouldnt make any deci sions on the course Coun Jans who has read completer the Grades and sections of the course said wouldnt take thing out recommend that we take no action on it the course she said And please dont return it to us again any money over Brcywards financial nosedive centre Representatives from Hi Way Pentecostal Church Barlt rie recently appeared before committee to say they were in terested in buying the building for use as church SUGGESTED PURCHASE It was suggested that if the HiWay Church bought the cen tre for use as church on Sun days they could lease the building to Heritage Baptist Church as school during the week Coun Jack Young quickly said however it would be contravene bylaws for the building to serve as church and school Mr Pennell who said the school is non profit organiza tion said he was not prepared to make an offer for the building We cant afford large lease he said If it it out of our range well look elsewhere It is estimated the lease would be at least $4000 year Ever since the supreme court decision was announced the church has received donations to help defray the costs of an appeal and the cost of building new school Committee will not make any recommendations until aftei report on current bookings for the centre is finished The building ma be booked throughout September said Grant Andrade deputy reeve Coun Don Koopmans said council required more informa tion on the churchs plans before any decision When trees were removed to allow construction of the cor ridor the stream banks were exposed Wind rain and gravi ty cause soil to erode into the stream and the stream became heavily silted said Mills The Brereton Field Natur alists applied for Young Canada Works grant to hire three students for 15 weeks on stream rehabilitation project When the grant was approv Barries ed the club selected Matheson Creek as its project because of serious erosion problems there Mills said Hydro officials gave permission for the work and after the students presented project proposal Ontaio Hydro offered to help pay for the project Bob Richmond environment superintendent for Hydros Georgian Bay Region said Hydro agreed to help because it is good propertyowner IDENTIFIED BY MINISTRY Matheson Creek was iden tified to us by the conservation authority and ministry of natural resources as sensitive creek and important in the watershed said Richmond As property owner we feel we have an obligation to see that our property is maintained to certain standard Erosion there is phenomenal and we want to en sure its reduced to an accep table level he said Hydro has offered up to $1700 to the group to pay for supplies The students are operating on $7290 grant but most of that is consumed by wages The group has about $1400 for other ex penses said Mills the oxamlnor Timmyng 1m The students have planted about 1400 dogwood shrubs along the corridor These shrubs will help hold earth and povide good habitat for birds said Mills In addition the students are building log cribbing along the banks to prevent soil from sliding into the water Grass seed is planted on soil piled behind the cribbing In two years hopefully you wont be able to see the cribb ing because of the grass said Mills Hydro will
