aA the examiner Friday July 13 1979 MAX HAIES Crime Flashback deadly The Isle ofArran is la est and most scenic of the Clyde Islands Situated the tuarx 0f the Clydp in Scotland it has often nref rred to as one most pic turesque locations in the world Certainly an unlikely spot for murder but wouldnt you know it one of Scotlands most notorious murders 00k place on the side of Goatfell Mountain Arrans most outstanding feature Goatfell is gray cone rising 2866 feet above seat level At the turn of the century the steamer Ivanhoe made its way down the Clyde eady day stopping at various ports in Arran On Friday July 12 1889 two young men boarded the Ivanhoe at Rothesay Both were planning to vacation in Ar ran Edwin Robert Rose was 32yearold Englishman who was looking forward to his two weeks vacation from his job with building firm in London He boarded the Ivanhoe in the best of spirits Edwin wasnt long aboard the steamer when he met fellow traveller with the same destination John Annandale and Edwin became friends When they reached the port of Brodick the two men disem arked for the afternoon The steamer would return for them that same evening The pair separated in Brodick Annandale found it difficult to obtain rooms due to local fair taking place that week Finally he located lodgings at Mrs Walkers who could only provide facilities such as they were in leant0 beside her house Annandale took the leanto for week informing Mrs Walker that he and friend would occupy the premises the following day Satur day He would be staying full week However his friend would only be staying until the following Wednesday Fateful trip Later that same day both men met boarded the Ivanhoe and returned to Rothesay Here Rose introduced Annandale to two friends whom he had met during the previous few days Mr Thom and Mr Mickel All four planned on taking the Ivanhoe back to Brodick the following day Rose was delighted that Annandale was able to procure accommoda tions for them both The best the two newcomers Thom and Mickel could do was to secure lodgings on boat anchored in the bay On Sunday the men went sightseeing in pairs That even ing all four again met and spent the evening together Over the weekend Thom and Mickel formed an unfavorable opi nion of Annandale They couldnt put their finger on it but he seemed evasive and uncommunicative about his past On Monday when Rose mentioned that he and Annandale would be climbing Goatfell Mountain together Mickel advised Rose of his intuitive feeling regarding Annandale Rose shrugged off the warning Next day when Thorn and Mickel boarded the Ivanhoe to return to Rothesay Rose and Annandale waved goodbye to them from the pier The two men then set off to climb Goatfell Next morning Mrs Walker noticed that there was no sign of her two lodgers She waited until 11 am before entering the leanto The skimpy room gave evidence of having been slept in but the two men were missing Mrs Walker figured that her roomers had skipped without paying the rent Rose had been due back in London at his place of employ ment on Thursday July 18 He never showed up Within few days relatives of the missing man arrived in Brodick and after Mrs Walkers story contacted the police The dtsappearance became the chief topic of conversation in the area Soon police in conjunction with volunteers formed search party In deep gully covered with granite boulders the search party found the body of Edwin Rose The dead man had suffered fearful blows to the head pro bably caused by rock His trouser pockets had been strip ped of their contents Later it was ascertained that Rose had probably been pushed over precipice His attacker realiz mg the fall had not been fatal leaned over the fallen man and rained blows upon his head The missing persons in quiry had turned into brutal murder Where was the man who had hiked up Goatfell Mountain with Rose Where was John Annandale Police traced Annandales activities before his meeting with Rose They found out that he had taken rooms from Mrs Currie of Port Bannantyne using fictitious name before travelling to Arran He left wearing straw hat When he returned he sported white yachting cap and brown tennis jacket During the balance of his stay with Mrs Currie the wanted man had mentioned that he had climbed Goatfell Mountain Abruptly one morning he went for walk and never returned He stuck Mrs Currie with his bill but left two pieces of clothing in his room The yachting cap and tennis jacket were turned over to the police They had belonged to Edwin Rose Two weeks after the murder reporters from the North British Daily Mail managed to get handle on John An nandale His real name was John Watson Laurie of Glasgow The 25yearold man was from welltodo respectable family but had been in and out of minor scrapes all his life The industrious reporters located amts Aitken who knew the wanted man as Laurie and who had been on the Ivanhoe with Laurie and Rose When Aitken first met the two men travelling to Brodick Rose was wearing white yachting cap When he met Laurie after the visit to Brodick he thought it strange that Laurie was not wearing his former companions cap Strangely enough Aitken met Laurie for third time in Glasgow after Roses body was found He asked Laurie about the case now referred to by the newspapers as the Ar ran Mystery Laurie became flustered and swore the man he had been with was not the same man who was found murdered Then he dashed away and disappeared into crowd Laurie took off He left his job in Glasgow walked out on his landlady without paying the rent sold his pattern makers tools and went into hiding Now actively being sought under his real name as murder suspect Laurie wrote his first of several letters while being the most wanted man in all of Scotland He wrote his lanllady enclosing his 1979 Toronto Sun Syndicate John Laurie Edwin Rose back rent Suspected murderers usually dont do that Then again most murderers dont wear their victims cap and jacket after the foul deed has been done Now really on the run Laurie made his way to Liverpool where he left several of Roses shirts in rooming house which he hastily vacated He then took the amazing step of writing to the British public by means of sending letter to the North British Daily Mail In it Laurie explained that he had left Rose alive and well with two strangers on top of Goatfell Lauries literary talents received wide acclaim throughout Britain This was better than Robin Hood No doubt encouraged by the excitement caused by his first let ter Laurie again took pen in hand and dashed off greetings to the Glasgow Herald The letter was published on Aug 29 In it Laurie took several pages in an endeavour to convince the public that he was cross between an angel and mar tyr On Wed Sept over month after the murder the wanted man was apprehended station master became suspicious of man loitering near the depot It was Lauries bad luck that at precisely that moment constable strolled into the station Laurie realized what was about to happen He dashed out but was tackled in some nearby woods Stood trial Laurie stood trial in Edinburgh for the murder of Edwin Rose He pleaded not guilty He claimed that Rose had fallen to his death Laurie admitted to robbing and then con cealing the body His clean cut appearance at the trial weighed heavily in his favor The public had expected monster but instead were presented with an articulate young man Despite this Laurie was found guilty and sentenced to hang Surprisingly the public didnt want their dashing letter writing Robin Hood to die petition was circulated pleading for the convicted mans life Copies were placed in offices banks and churches throughout Scotland The mass petition with 138140 signatures affixed to it was presented to the Secretary of Scotland As result an order was issued to have Laurie undergo mental examination He was found to be of unsound mind and the death sentence was cum muted to life imprisonment The convicted murderer was sent to Peterhead Prison to serve his sentence Four years later the Arran murderer climbed an eight foot wall and escaped He managed to wooded area before guards surrounded him and brought him back He had been outside the prison compound for only one half hour It would be his last taste of freedom John Watson Laurie died in prison on Oct 1930 at the age of 69 after serving 49 years behind bars The old sensational crime is still occasionally topic of conversation in the area Today there is cairn marki the spot where Roses body lay concealed beneath the ban der few miles away in the picturesque village of Sannox in an ancient graveyard lies the body of Edwin Rose The huge granite boulder which serves as headstone gives no hint of how Rose met his death The imcription merely states in llgvilnagmemory of Edwin Rose who died on Goatfell July EVENING 600 ED NEWS HOLLYWOOD SQUARES DEFINITION POLKA DOT DOOR 628 NEWS 630
