US space agency sent Skylab into tumble today in its final hours to steer it away from North America and reported later the big station was headed for deathdive over the south Atlantic or Indian Oceans All indications are that we are moving down stream into that big water area said the Richard Smith of the agency He said Skylabs threat to land appeared to be diminishing The North American Air Defence Com mand NORAD predicted at am EDT that Skylab would come down sometime in two hour 20minute period between 1040 am and pm EDT The midpoint or most probable impact time was 1150 am EDT That would bring Skylab down in the North Atlantic shortly after it had crossed Canada and the state of Maine between 650 and 1000 kilometres offshore Smith said however that because of the tumbling motion he expected the spacecraft to land farther south either in the south Atlantic or Indian Ocean or both Skylab was expected spray about 20 tons of debris over an area 6500 kilometres long and 160 kilometres wide SAYS WORLD SAFE By narrowing the projected reentry win dow NORAD nearly assured most areas of the world they would be safe from Skylab fallout map released by the Naiional Aeronautics and Space Administration show ed that Skylab would travel over only about 23 orbits in that period The path starting at 1020 am EDT begins over the Azores enters Africa over Mauritania crosses Upper Volta Ghana north of Accra across the Gulf of Guinea Funeral Friday for boys who died in fire By STEPHEN NICHOLLS Of The Examiner special funeral will be held at Creemore Community Arena Friday neighbors and friends set up the fund which starts today but the families have not decided which charitable organiza tion will receive the money Ontario Fire Marshal investigators con tinue tests on materials taken from the scene to determine how the fire started Police suspect fire may have spread from Iqampfire in homemade firepit inside the ut The Centre of Forensic Pathology is also carrying out tests on samples taken from the bodies to determine whether the boys died of asphyxiation from smoke inhalation or from other causes New bitterness hits NB strike BATHURST CP This northern New Brunswick community is without police ser vices again today as strike seemingly settl ed overnight continued through seventh day with new bitterness Negotiators for the city and the police returned to the bargaining table shortly before dawn amid union charges of trickery on the part of the city concerning contract clause on police rank structure Blair Boucher chief negotiator for the policemen announced shortly after midnight Tuesday night that police had ratified new threeyear contract and that the strike was over The 26 members of the force then donned riot gear and moved to the downtown section to stop vandalism and violence that has torn this city apart the last five nights At about am local time after the street mobs had been dispersed the officers were told by Boucher vital clause concerning rank structure had been dropped by the city in the memorandum of agreement It was just as if the city had never heard of the clause even though it had been referred to during negotiations Boucher said MEMBERSHIP lPSET The membership blew up when told them We cannot believe the city would cheat and he as they did Leopold Arsenault the representative for the Canadian Union of Public Employees and bargaining agent for the police said the rank structures designed by the city would dictate steps of promotion within the force spokesman for the city said council meeting would be called today to consider the turn of events The ball is now in their court Arsenault said in reference to city council Angola Botswana and South Africa across the Indian Ocean and southeast Australia On its final projected orbit Skylab will cross the north Pacific cutting across the northwest tip of the United States north of Everett Wash arcing across south central Canada north of Montreal and transversing the United States again north of Augusta Me and out into the Atlantic where it was ex pected to reenter by the time it reached the Indian Ocean We think this is the safest and most pru dent action we can take at this time to give us the absolute minimum probability of casual ty of any sort from Skylab Smith told reporters radio signal was sent at 347 am EDT to day to fire nitrogen gas thrusters which started the 775t0n craft wobbling and roll ing as it passed through an altitude of 147 kilometres Confirmation that the manoeuvre worked came 30 minutes later when Skylab passed within range of tracking station in Madrid Spain NASA spokesman 80b Gordon reported The rate is not as high as anticipated at this time but indications are that Skylab is begin ning its final entry to earth DELAY SOUGHT The action was intended to delay Skylabs fiery reentry about 30 minutes until about noon EDT On that timetable the tons of Skylab debris that did not burn up would fall harmlessly into the Indian Ocean The decision to start the craft tumblimg was made after the North American Air Defence Command which has been tracking the spacecraft issued revised reentry prediction at 1235 am EDT today It forecast Skylab was likely to reenter over the north Pacific posing potential threat to North America primarily Canada An official at Emergency Planning Canada in Ottawa said We cant stop it from falling but everything is in place to minimize the damage should it come down in our region The earlier predictions had placed the most likely reentry area in the south Atlantic or Indian oceans far from land We decided to change our plans and in itiate the tumble early to allow us an extra 30 minutes to get back our the Indian Ocean Smith said If we didnt do it we would in crease the likelihood of coming down over North America and picking up the possibility of North Africa NASA emphasized that even if parts of the giant station hit land the chances of injury or damge are slim If news reports indicate fragments are headed for particular areas the agency suggests people take no special precautions except perhaps to stay indoors NASA estimates about twothirds of the space
