HARPER Chay The Great Canadian Bicycle Rally took place last weekend at Woodstock Ont The weather was bad for the three days of the rally but it didnt stop more than 700 bicy cle riders from having terrific time It was an honour for me to be invited to this great sports event with riders from all over the world participating The third annual gathering of the bicycle clans the rally is uni que event involving whole families and promoting all aspects of cycling Families and individuals cycled to Woodstock some rode hundreds of miles proving many people are rediscovering their physical potential and in tegrating cycling into their lifestyle The weekend started off Saturday with mass ride through Woodstock and picture taking Riders then had choice of three different tours and given detailed map with nots on the areas and local landmarks The tours varied in distance from 24 to 60 miles One was 40 miles Paraphernalia display sight to see Many things relating to cycling were on display at the Southside Park pavillion such as helmets lights and other safety devices jewelry in the form of bicycles and lots of There photographs of both racing and touring on display as well as everal slide shows presented by the Ontario Cycling It was pleasure to meet several old friends from the cycling world over the weekend especially Nora Young one of Canadas greatest allround athletes in the 1930s All round Canadian Bicycle Champion for many years she was also known for her talents in basketball baseball and Sunday was busy day for the tour riders and for those who wanted to escape the rain there was free premier showing of the cycling movie Breaking Away Saturday square dance took place in the Pavilion to the music of local band and although most dancers seemed to have trouble following the caller they sure had lot of fun Tall tales contest entertained Sunday evening the Pavilion was the place to be once again for some extremely funny entertainment the Na tional Tall Tale Championships What whoppers they told too Following the contest was the North American Roaring Championship to find the person with the loudest and tip of the hat must go to the organizers of this rally my old pal Tom Parry of the Ontario Cycling Association and Jean Ross resident of Woodstock They did fantastic job even with the weather against them Most cyclists camped at the park and the variety of tents crammed into few acres of ground was unbelievable Many people played musical instruments or sang songs to park and in the pavilion It was an enjoyable weekend and Im glad was part of
