that could reduce radiation doses by up to 90 per cent Dr Ernest Letoumeau head of the radia tion protection bureau said Thursday the proposed regulations will apply only to new 7day week Laborready iust in case By LORI OIIEN Of The Examiner The union president at General Tire and Rubber Co in Barrie and other local labor representativcs are preparing themselves for fight against sevenday continental work week in the Canadian rubber industry Bob Dennis president of the United Rubber Workers Local 536 at General Tire told the Barrie and District Labor Council employees at General Tire plant in Akron Ohio have accepted such plan and the idea could spread to other branch This particular modified plan consists of three 4Lhour shifts from Monday to Friday and two 24hour weekend shifts With pay that equals 36 hours of work This plan could easily cause rifts in the union membership because senior employees will be able to work the shorter shift for practically the same wages as the longer one he said Because this work plan allows machinery to run seven days week companies will be in highly competitive position Jim Ap plcgatc labor council president said If one Canadian company goes the others will have hard time not to he said We should try to resist the change as much as possible Dennis termed the continental work week rather insidious approach by the company to divide workers Applegate urged Dennis to stir up con troversy in all rubber plants in Canada against the plan Boy still missing Nineyearold Kevin Reimer of Ed monton is the subject of massive search in Elk lsland National Park near Edmonton where he disap peared last Friday The search enters its eighth day today CP Photo equipment imported or manufactured local lv However Letoumeau said most of the machines in use are equipped with many of the proposed safety features including wam ing lights and safety and emergency switches to prevent moving machine from crushing patient Regulations also call for better xray filtra tion an audible timelimit signal and ex posure controls for shorter irradiation periods For example Letoumeau said some models now are equipped with exposure timers set to control irradiations as short as one second The proposed standards call for automatic exposure controls which can be set to as short as onesixtieth of second With all the regulations put together if all machinery meet these regulations the total dose could be reduced to less than 10 per cent of present levels But Letoumeau said the total reduced radiation dosage will not be in effect for about 10 years when all new models equipped with those mandatory features are used in hospitals and clinics across the country This effect will only be seen when all the regulations are applied He said machines up to 15 years old are still in use but their replacement is not urgent he said Lauderappeal action starts By STEPHEN NICHOLLS Of The Examiner Appeal action is under way for 21yearold Barrie
