Graham Parker rock masses are catching up UK rocker finds hes back TORONJO Lli Graham Parkers music was about two years ahead of its time when he cut his first record in 1976 Now by his own observations rock masses are catching up with thetimes His debut album Howlio Wind and the followup Heat Treatment were critically ac claimed as top releases of 1976 But the British rockers follow ing was commercially limited From the start his music had the raw edge of an angry young man even before the punks and new wave artists had made an ger fashionable commodity among musicians Today while many punk mu sicians have demonstrated the lasting power of cheap fire cracker and while the initial impact of new wave music has ebbed Parker is finally coming unto his own The roughandtumblc rock of Parker and The Rumour the reliable band behind his music persists with an almost smug awareness that rock audiences at last have seen the light Weve sold lot of records here just found out Parker said pretty much unknown in Canada be cause the other records flopped really But this one has actually sold quitea bit Few rock journalists have gone to press with Graham Parker critique without first drawing some comparison with Elvis Costello new wave super star and the epitome of musics angry breed To the North American ear similarities be tween the two British artists are undeniably there although Parker himself argues the point ironically while Parker was tied up selling his power in Britain and involved in hassles with Mercury his former label newcomer Costello was being dropped on America by CBS like bomb from Britain with equally explosive results The explosion is only now be ginning for Parker on this side of the Atlantic Did Costello perhaps clear the way Parker doesnt care and the comparisons dont bother him When started off he says through thick lazy accent it was like comparisons with Van Morrison and Bruce Springs teen had never even heard of Springsteen when Id done the first LP And dont think Elvis Cos tello sounds much like me at all now mean his first album iMy Aim Is True was reminis cent of lot of my stuff yknow but it also sounds like very early Van
