preious films Eastwood has portrayed macho individualists and in the pro cess built up tremendous following as one of the few re maining toughguy screen heroes Hes usually played contemporary version of the frontier fighter man who shoots first and asks questions later In Alcatraz the potential violence in the Eastwood character is constantly sup pressed Eastwoods films are carefully structured around car chases fights and shootouts that provide the cheap thrills Charity funarama set for July Arrangements are just about complete for the 4th annual Funerama and offee break to be presented by the violence to couple of brief fights that develop from sutrplot involv ed prison bully who threatens Morris RHYTHM And while the film effectively portrays the boredom and frustration Alcatraz was par ticularly harsh and brutal in its treatment of prisoners it never develops the sense of rhythm so necessary for good escapefilm Unlike Midnight Express for example the film doesnt try to kick the audience in the gut with explicit violence It doesnt provoke any response at all except mild feeling of relief when Morris and his ac complices finally scale the last fence and swim away on an im provised life raft Theres draggy feel to the film that shouldnt be there Most of the blame for that rests with novice screenwriter Richard Tuggle whose script is so deliberate and so plodding that the story never takes off Tuggles notion of characteriza tion is so crude that all the characters including Morris come across as feeble stereotypes WARDEN The warden Patrick McGoohan is cruel and sadistic in the standard film tradition of prison wardens The guards are nasty Morriss friends are flat as cardboard meek artist who goes beserk when his painting privileges are removed an embittered black man whos touched by Morriss friendship man with pet mouse who helps Morris escape and bushleague car thief who loses his nerve once the escape is launched There is dramatic powerful story hiding somewhere in Escape From Alcatraz but director Don Siege who work ed with Eastwood on four filmsI wasnt able to get it on the screen Location shooting even on Alcatraz doesnt guarantee good film and even surefire story like the Morris escape eludes the grasp of star like Eastwood But thats not all Causc were giving away funfilled premiums and freerefllls on soft drinks too Tag lglble kids must be
