JEAN CABLE Barrie Horticultural Society From June 13 to 15 seven delegates from Barrie Horticultural Society attended the Ontario Horticultural Conveniion at Holiday Inn in London Ont It was the first time the convention was ever held in that area in 73 years total 638 delegates attended and District 16 which now has 28 horticultural socieities was well represented This is the district Barrie is in President Muriel Klie of Hanover presided most ably There was so many very fine speakers oall had very important message that my head was re ling from trying to absorb all could For the first time many specialized societies wer given time to speak on their societies such as the International Li ly Society holding show at Royal Botanical Gardens luly 13 to 15 It is real honor for Ontario to welcome this group and our society takes bus there Saturday July 14 We heard from the Chrysantheniiim and Dahlia Society the Canadian Iris Society the Canadian Rose Society whose show we shall visit Sunday June 24 at Royal Botanical Gardens and the Rhododendron Society We were amazed to learn that rhododendrons can be grown very well at Col dwater whre the incoming president of that group has very large planting His name is Ross Dean and we shall hear more of him An immigrant Dutchman who came to Canada with nothing climbed the ladder of success and by all accounts and appearances was standing firmly on his own two feet man among men made us all feel we had much to be grateful for His name was Theodore Smeenk Vice president of Barrie society taped his address He asked everyone to forget the pictures of gloom painted by the media at all levels to forget the things we have not got and count our blessings In summary Canada is the greatest county in the world and Canadians are by far the luckiest people on earth was his thought would agree Jim St Marie who has been speaker at our fall banquet spoke on how important communication was Every group with message to get across could learn from his talk He used to work with the late Earle Cox on CBC seminar on civic beautification gave numerous ideas but this writer feels the local horticultural society has long been involved in this aspect of horticulture at all levels and the only place it falls down is with junior participation Somehow we must get the children more involved Alastair Crawford of Om had some ideas on outreach and speaking of outreach Ray Halward had his mobile clinic them boughbat cost of $10000 by the provinces societies and he is doing tremendous work with seniors mentally han dicapped and others We hope to bring him to Barrie for whole day and let some of our senior homes benefit Professor Kelly of the University of Guelph told all about those specimens you send him to diagnose They usually are mess when they reach him because people do not take pains to see they are preserved The mails are slow and specimens dry up or rot or become mush He is in the biology section There were some wonderful slides entered in the photographic competition but not one from Barrie Edna Caldwell of 0m won two prizes in slides Labatts have now offered grand prize of beautiful watch won by ladv from Agincourt Maybe that will entice some Barrie ex hibitors The finances of the Ontario Horticultural Association seem to be in very good condition The secretarys report was most encouraging as horticulture seems on the march in our province Madeline Hobson new District 16 director spoke on youth curricula She is just starting her term of office so maybe we can do more for our local youth under her guidance Among the delegates at the convention were the leaders of the Mens Garden Clubs of American and the Garden Clubs of Nova Scotia The banquet speaker was McGuigan who spoke on our changing times After listening to him one was sure less inclined to blame the youth for their problems and look in ward to ones own self The new OHA president is Roy Carr of North Bay The 1980 Convention will be in Thunder Bay June 18 to 20 The Annual Trillium Pin Award given to the womav in Ontario who has done the most for Horticulture went to Nina Powers of Sandwich Horticultural Society for 35 dedicated years to her society The Award of Merit went to Harvey Gerry of Elora for his dedication He has just com pleted 400 broadcasts on horticulture The highest award the Silver Medal went to Bob Keith of Richmond Hill and the Community Improvement Award to Adams Mines in Kirkland Lake for their contribution in civic beautification SOCIETY NEWS On June 14 the local society lost very dedicated and en thusiastic board member in Martin Bax Martin was hor ticulturally trained in Holland and like our Dutch im migrant at the convention he loved Canada and Barrie with great passion We the other side of the bed My wife five years my junior hit menopause and for five years fought off all advances toward lovemaking remained faithful to her Finally after plenty of misery put my cards on the table She agreed to resume having sex and agreed that it had always been mutually satisfying No love play arouses her anymore To me giving as well as receiving is important Even though feel relaxed after wards the act is not satisfactory have tried all the tricks of bygone days to restore that old feeling but nothing works Is my wife unable to enjoy the act or is it all in her mind Sexy Sixties Who Says So Dear Who Almost all impotence in males and rigidity in females is caused by emotional problems Your wife should have checkup to make sure nothing is physically wrong Then together you should have frank talk with gynecologist Perhaps he can set the situation straight or suggest counsellor woman in her 60s who is in good health should be en joying sex Those five years of famine didnt do her any good or you either When you dont use it you lose it at least temporarily hope counselling helps and that you make up for time lost Dear Ann Landers My sisterinlaw is late for everything get especially annoyed when she asks me to pick her up to go to luncheon or club meeting like to be prompt and always am except when have to wait for Ella Yesterday we had it out Her tardiness made me 20 minutes late for League of Women Voters meeting and am the secretary Ella became highly indignant said people who are prompt let the world know they have little else to do She thinks its smart to give the impression of being very busy occupied with many things and therefore im portant say to be consistently late is rude and inconsiderate and Ella is full of prunes Comment please San Antonio Dear An People who are consistently late are not only rude and inconsiderate but poorly organized The most important peoplel know rarely keep others waiting Erma Bombeck Odds against Boy really weird thing happened last week to two friends of ours Bud and Babs Peripatetic They moved from Indiana to California and get this the house they bought was vacant when they arrived the van carrying their furniture showed up when it was sup posed to the utilities were turned on in the house and is this too much they got their own furniture back Do you have any idea what the odds are of having every thing come out on schedule during move Some guy in Vregas figured it out once and its twelvemilliontoone 0t Frankly would have thought the odds would have been higher You wont believe it but Im one of those wonder fully organized people who is prepared for anything When we moved couple of years ago from Ohio to Arizona there were no surprises When the van arrived at the house and discovered the truck was too wide to come over the bridge expected that When the packers packed the garbage and loaded it on the truck but left the picnic table and lawn furniture in the side lard expected that When we arrived at the house and the mover called from Iaos New Mexico and said he exited too early expected that When the only room in the motel was honeymoon suite at $85 day and the kids crayoned on the heartshaped toilet seat expected that When the mover insisted the bill be paid in cash and the bill was $220 more than they figured and it was Saturday and all the banks were closed and no one in town knew us well enough to cash cheque expected that When we found that the water in the toilet was hooked up to the hot water tank and wewere shrouded in steam every time we flushed expected that When something happened to my system and was sur rounded with 75 cardboard boxes in the living room all marked Miscellaneous expected that But when the mover who had loaded up the furniture from our old house moved it into our new house stopped suddenly looked around picked his teeth with matchbook cover and said wouldnt have traded you the old house even for this one lady didnt expect that Pollys Pointers Hair spray removes ink DEAR POLLY friends children made marks with ballpoint pen on my vinyl coat while was visiting with them have tried various sprays and
