REV WILLIAM FRITZ Collier United Delivering sermon on Lords Beginning this Sunday and continuing through July 29 Reverend William Fritz of Col lier Street United Church Bar rie will be delivering sermon series on the Lords Prayer People today are searching for fulfilling relationship with God know of no better place to start than with Jesus own prayer to the Heavenly Father That prayer has stood the test of time People in their time of Points to ponder Prayer need and hurt have prayed that prayer and they have not been disappointed said Mr Fritz The Elders of Collier Church invite all especially those who have no church home to Collier Church at this time Service time this Sunday is 10 am with child care and Sun day School provided for parents with children cordial welcome to all Christians stand on hallowed ground By DOROTHY KILHLRN When Abraham Lincoln stood before the Gettysburg field where so many American boys died to gain freedom from slavery for the negro he said We cannot dedicate we can not consecrate we cannot hallow this ground The brave men who struggled here have consecrated it far beyond our power to add or detract it is for us the living rather to be dedicated to the unfinished work which they who fought here have so nobiy advanced Each Christian hs hallow ed consecrated ground it is the little plot where Christ shed His blood on the Cross of Calvary We cannot add to its sacredness but we can dedicate our lives to the purpose of the One who died there Before Christ went to the Cross He prayed for His disciples in this manner For their sakes consecrate myself that they themselves might be consecrated in truth John 1719 He consecrated Himself in WINNIPEG CP The two women were ordained in the Anglican diocese of Ruperts Land only months apart and share the same deep commitment to the church and its work But the road to the priesthood was long and tortured for one of them short and direct for the other Ruth Pogson 54 worked in the church for nearly 30 years never daring to hope she could be priest and never expecting the decision by the general synod in 1975 which finally opened the way to the ordination of women She has unhappy memories about how women were treated in the church hierarchy and how she struggled fiercely with herself several times about whether to continue with other church work because the priesthood was closed to her Now she talks passionately about being able to minister completely to her parishioners leaving the impression she is going to make up for many lost years There is not shred of doubt in my mind that was called to be priest says Rev Pogson who was or dained last October Mary Whytehead 24 who was ordained in February says she responded to similar call to the ministry but she arrived by more conventional route going to university and taking year off before attending divinity college LITTLE RESISTANCE By the time she graduated in class that included three other women she faced little resistance didnt feel had to fight any battles she says found was well accepted as Mary Whytehead not simply as woman Women priests high dedication order to make it possible for others to be consecrated to His will and purpose Christs purpose was twofold to show how loving and mer ciful His Father was and to pro vide forgiveness and cleansing for you and for me The aim and purpose of each Christian should be to minister to others as Christ as ministered to us Not many of us are called to mnister in dramatic fashion but we are each called to minister in the everyday things of life mother ministers when she forgoes material things in order to stay at home to love and care for her little one husband ministers in the workaday world in order to provide for his family minister ministers when he pro vides listening post for the problems of his flock neighbour ministers when he visits the sick and the lonely For the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto but to minister and to give his life ranson for many Mark 1045 Her ministry will be guided by belief that the relationship between clergy and congretation is more than that of provider and consumer By the time Rev Pogson was in position to consider such question her own experience as woman in the church had determined much of her attitude She had spent more than 25 years mastering Christian education and parish work mainly in Toronto and remembers vividly what was expected of woman in the church during the 1950s and early 19605 Even after she established her competence in synod and diocesan staff jobs she felt she and other women often received secondclass treatment We were not accepted by our male peers as evidenced by the salary scales and our exclusion from clergy gatherings which were relevant to our work The important thing that kept me going was that prayed at every point that God would show me His will always felt led by Him That was very strong for me Rev Pogson can barely find words to describe how desolate she felt about working closely with small parish youps and being unable to give them com munion To have shared their lurts and joys and not be able to share the body and blood of our Lord it leaves big hole she says in voice which trails off at the hurtful memory To minister to people who are sick and not be able to annoint them is like cutting off your arm irit of community Mission now church LETHBRIDGE CP What started out as mission for struggling troubled young per sons has become major church in this southern Alberta city In 1973 teams of Calgary youngsters carried little more than prayer and bundle of enthusiasm when they started the weekend ministries of the New Hope Christian Centre Now the in terdemoninational church has its ranks swollen to about 90 adults and 40 children It is Eleparing to build larger ilding or services The familyoriented church has come long way It kind of got the term New Dope Centre says John Syr att interim congregational leader while Pastor Keith Ha zell is in England Former drug users and push ers still dot the membership list but the churchs doors have opened to persons of wide range of ages and religious backgrounds Syratt says members about onethird with Roman Catholic backgrounds are looking for the intimate and supportive Christian fellowship they cant find in other cojr ches The spirit of community is fostered by small Bible study groups that meet each Wednes day Outside of two services each Sunday members also can participate in Monday EMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH is St mm mm BARRIE ONTARIO Flov Frank
