AX HAINES Crime Flashback 11 1979 Toronto Sun Syndicate Strange mothers love Juries at murder trials have often been criticized for br inging in verdicts which seem at odds with the evidence they have just heard In hindsight we might think that if we had been on the jury our verdict would have been different It is true that hindsight leaves much to be desired When we scan old transcripts we cannot catch the inflections or connotations placed on important and sometimes in criminating statements Above all we cannot measure the very human reactions of the accused in court Today we will try to place you the reader in the jurors box You will be able to consider the evidence much as it was presented at the time of this most perplexing murder trial At the conclusion of the trial you will be faced with the dilemma is the accused innocent or guilty Come along with me now to Merrie England at the turn of the century It is Friday Oct 27 1899 terror filled scream pierces the musty air of Londons Dalston Junction Station cleaning lady has stumbled upon gruesome find Her ter ror is well founded for in the ladies waiting room lies the nude body of little boy He had been struck heavy blow to the head which probably rendered him unconscious Then the tiny lad had been suffocated The body was wrapped in ladys black shawl Within day the victim was identified as fouryearold Manfred Masset His mother Louise was being sought by the police Within week she was arrested and charged with the murder of her young son The trial which followed was puzzling in many ways Microscopic examination The Crown subjected Louise Massets life to the microscooic examination of woman accused of brutal and cold blooded murder At the time of her sons murder Louise was 36 years old She was plain quiet woman who had never crossed paths with the law before Four years earlier Manfred had been born as the result of an affair with Frenchman whose identity was never revealed during Louises trial Louise who lived with her sister Mrs Cadisch at StokeNewington was governess to several respected families in London None of her employers knew that she was the mother of little boy Manfred who was cheerful well adjusted child was liv ing with and being cared for by Miss Gentle while Louise went about making living for herself and her son There is every indication that Louise loved her son dearly On occa sion she received mail from France and it is assumed she was the recepient of some financial help from Manfreds father Each Wednesday Louise visited Manfred bringing the child candy and toys Louise had lover Her next door neighbor was 19year old boy named Lucas Louise had told the much younger Lucas of the existence of her son The fact that Louise had an illegitimate child did not seem to bother Lucas It is quite possible that had external influences not come into play the pair might have married On Oct 16 1899 Louise wrote Miss Gentle that she would be taking Manfred out of her care She explained that the boys father had requested that he be sent to France to be educated She was planning on picking up her son on Oct 27 and continuing on to France with the boy Louise told her sister Mrs Cadisch the same story Both women accepted Louises straightforward explanation at face value In preparation for her trip Louise had purchased black shawl at shop in StokeNewington Later she was positive ly identified by the clerk who had made the sale Louise told her boyfriend quite different story than the one she related to the two ladies She never mentioned trip to France but on Oct 25 she made date with Lucas to meet him in Brighton the following Saturday Oct 28 She couldnt possibly have intended to be in Brighton and France on the same day Lucas travelled to Brighton fully expecting Louise to arrive on Saturday On Friday Oct 27 Louise picked up her son as previously arranged She told Mrs Gentle that she would make her way to London Bridge Station and catch boat train to France She disclosed that she planned on returning in three or four days Substantiating witnesses proved that Louise and her son arrived at London Bridge Station at 145 pm She spoke to an attendant there and as she lingered she idly mentioned that she was waiting for someone At about pm after waiting for about an hour she told the waiting room atten dant that her son was getting restless as he had just been parted from nurse of whom he was very fond Louise bought Manfred piece of cake to settle him down and then left the station with her son No one knows for sure what happened during the next three and half hours At 630 pm Manfreds body was found at Dalston Junction Station At 722 that same evening Louise caught the train at Lon don Bridge and went straight to Brighton She spent the weekend with Lucas as she had told him she would As far as he was concerned nothing untoward had taken place He was completely unaware of Louises elaborate plans to transport her son to France Picked up When police identified Manfreds body Louise went to friend for advice Her friend advised her to go to the police Louise hesitated and within hours was being hunted She was eventually picked up by the authorities Louise stood trial for the murder Louise and Manfreds movements were well documented right up to 300 pm on the day of the murder There is gap of three and half hours during which Louises actions are unknown The childs body was then discovered at 630 pm wrapped in Louises shawl The defense presented Louises story and quite story it was She claimed that each Wednesday when she visited cluding the circumstances surrounding Manfreds birth She elaborated that while Manfreds present set up with Miss Gentle was adequate now that he was approaching school age she wanted something better for him in the way of education By coincidence the ladies revealed that they were in the process of starting kindergarten in Kings Road Chelsea Louise expressed great interest but was concerned that the cost would be prohibitive The ladies who were known to Louise only as the Misses Browning quoted price of twelve pounds year for Manfreds care Spared feelings Louise was thrilled at being able to place her son for such reasonable amount One problem did exist How could she tell Miss Gentle who had been so good to Manfred and had grown so fond of the child herself Louise claimed she had made up the story of taking the boy to France to spare Miss Gentles feelings The defense concurred with the Crowns version of Louises movements right up to the point where Louise and Manfred were seen at London Bridge Station Louise you will recall told the attendant that she was waiting for so meone She claimed that she was waiting for the two ladies who she was to accompany to Chelsea to inspect their school Unfortunately the two women were waiting on the wrong platform According to Louise when she at last found them she knew that if she accompanied them to the school she would miss her 722 train to Brighton Remember Louise had known the two ladies for some time Influenced by their urging she turned her son and twelve pounds over to them Manfred was quite accustomed to the two women and gladly accompanied them with the expectation that he would soon be playing with his friend Millie Louise was assured that the ladies would contact her upon her return from Brighton She would then visit her sons new home That was Louises story It was strange tale but it ac counted for all her actions and certainly brought up the nag ging question of reasonable doubt Three physical facts couldnt be disputed Louise could not account for her shawl being wrapped around her sons body except to state that Manfred had carried small bag of clothing with him The shawl may have been included by mistake with his things The day after the murder the coat Manfred had been wear ing was found in the Brighton Station waiting room Louise had no idea how it got there Police could find no house func tioning as kindergarten on Kings Road in Chelsea Well what do you think Could woman who obviously loved her son strike him down in cold blood and suffocate him for no apparent reason Or was her story true Did the two ladies who never were located take the life of small boy for measly twelve pounds The Masset jury took only half hour to return with their verdict It was guilty Louise was hanged on Jan 1900 At the very last minute she confessed to killing her son but she never said why Ah but thats another mystery EVENING HOLLYWOOD SQUARES DEFINITION POLKA DOT DOOR 023 NEWS 830 NBC NEWS MARY
