not for William Ellis testy soccer player with two right feet more than 180 highschoolers would be without the opportunity to do battle for an Ontario title this weekend at Banting Memorial High School This Ellis you see was taking part in an intramural soc cer match at quaint English college way back in 1823 when suddenly his mediocre abilities at controlling the bouncing ball prompted him to take things in hand ld Bill just picked up the ball tucked it under his arm and snorted his way downfield The soccer establishment got quite upset at this un precendented display of disrespect for the games most basic rule And when the establishment is upset theres go ing to be lot of press And where theres press theres pro motion things jumping reaching base on fielders choice Danny Adams with the fifth run of the inning reached base on walk by Corman and scored as Ernie Cummings forced an error by Clarkson third baseman Steve Shaughnessy Steve Smith knocked triple with two out to bring in Clarksons first two runs John Greenside drove in Smith with his triple before Dan Massarot to struck out hitting for Cor man Clarkson committed four er Repoir bill to BMBA Recent repairs to Queens Park ball diamond will be charged to the Barrie Minor Baseball Association said Gary Stoner City Recreation Direc tor Tuesday Attempts to prepare the field for the BMBAs opening day games at the park Saturday left the field unsuitable to play on and Stoner said improper attempts were made to drag the infield causing displacement of mud onto the grassed portions of the field Stoner said members of the recreation department and volunteers from the Barrie and District Intermediate Fastball League repaired the field Sun day Other mavericks joined in Pretty soon other soccer mavericks began to pick up on Ellis headlinegrabbing jog Rules were made and the game got into full swing The place was Rugby College And Ellis run was historys first try In the years that followed that first unchallenged scoring play the game of rugby became firmly entrenched as part of school life in the British Isles The sport has not however been what youd call big hit with Canadian educational institutions Its here and there but at most schools in this country its about as popular as skeet shooting Ironically football an offshoot of rugby ranks among the most popular sports at Canadian schools But rugby is gaining momentum mainly at the expense of football which has been taking beating in Ontario high schools because of its expense and complaints of injury to its practitioners This Saturday at Banting Memorial High School in Alliston the first Ontario Federation of Secondary Schools Athletic Association rugby championship will be decided Twelve teams will participate Twelve teams representing 10 of Ontarios 17 high school athletic Associations will take part in the twoday event Barrie Central Collegiate champion of the host Georgian Bay Secondary Schools Athletic Association enters the tour nament one of the top seeds Another Barrie squad Eastview Secondary School will also be there and rippling with confidence after taking Central to the wire in the zone final The AllOntario title battle should be tough one despite one Toronto papers claim that the city is the stronghold of rugger But no matter who wins this firstannual event will un doubtably strengthen the position of the sport in the pro vinces schools Rugby has shown considerable growth in several associations over the last few yaars and provin cial title tournament its got that all the marbles ring to it was only matter of time Its nice at any rate to see at least one athletic endeavor on the increase Too many sports especially in the schools have been following falling off much too fast Perhaps it would be fitting for convener Jim Hamilton on opening the championship event to give tribute to the un coordinated shorttempered soccer player that made it all possible Shaughnessy first winner Mike Shaughnessy won the first latemodel feature race of the season at Barrie Speedway on the weekend The popular Barrie driver finished first in in his 1979 Camaro ahead of Joe Belesky in 1978 Camaro and James Whitney of Orillia in 1970 Chevelle The mini class leader after one night of racing is Garf Peacock of Midhurst Peacock drove his Datsun to first place finish followed by Joe Hayghton of Bradford and Bert Jolie of Hillsdale both in Datlt ï¬t Strange item yesterday about the Whitby Iroquois of the Canadian International Hockey League deciding to pack it in Jim Lemieux convener of the league sounded pretty rosy Sunday when he told me all teams assured him Wednesday that they would be returning for the 197980 season Except of course Barrie Flyers who werent represented at last weeks meeting and havent given anybody any assurances about anything in the past few months Now it looks like the CIHL will need more than an in terlocking schedule with Ontario University clubs Unless the Flyers Gord Coates decides to rejoin and without Whitby in there its good bet he wont the troubled loop will have to go with four clubs And thats not too likely at all More hockey does disappearing
