VWVWVw 1o the ognmlmrjroudny May 20 1979 Peter Sellers and Lynne Frederick in The Prisoner of Zenda period com edy thats tired reworking of an antique Sellers master of accent but humor is inept By STEPHEN iAIER The Examiner The laughs are very few and far between in The Prisoner of Zenda the new Peter Sellers movie that started Friday at the Imperial Sellers has tried to turn the Anthony Rose adventure novel already film ed three IIIIICSl into lavishly costumed comedy but more ef fort has gone into the sets than into the script havent seen such inept attempts at humor since Clint Eastwood tried to be funny in Every Which Way But Loose Sellers is one of the few modern masters of accent and impersonation In films like Dr Strangelove and the best of the Pink Panther series hes brought serious and comic characters to life with great skill Montreal But in The Prisoner of Zenda he plays two roles and both fail to be anything more than mild Iy amusing caricatures The first Sellers character we meet is Rudolph heir to the throne of the fictional country of Ruritania Rudolph is dim wit with speech impediment whos more concerned about seducing countess Elke Som meri than he is about his brothers plot to kill him and take over the throne Next we meet Rudolphs look alike London cabbie named Syd who agrees to travel to Ruritania to help the king sur vive his coronation Rudolph soon becomes prisoner in the Zenda castle Syd meets and falls in love with the beautiful Princess Flavia Lynne Frederick and decides pianist gets music medal QUEBEC CP John New mark Montreal pianist Council awards also were presented to Casavant Freres the St Hyacinthe Que builders of organs for many of the churches and concert halls of the world and to Andre Lap Iante of Montreal named artist of were forced to watch Sellers try to make the best of two equally uninteresting roles The rest of the cast seems to believe that comedy comes from exag gerated acting Director Richard Quine responsible for such film classics as Hotel and Sex and the Single Girl should be blamed for uniformly dull performances by actors like Lionel Jeffries as Rudolphs second in command and Jeremy Kemp as his scheming brother Miss Somer proves once again that she cant act no matter how undemanding the role Miss Frederick has only to look demure and beautiful to meet the demands of her role and with help from the costume department she succeeds The only consolation this movie offers is the location filming in the Austrian coun tryside and in the Schonbrunn Palace near Vienna The castles are beautiful the in teriors authentically regal and the mountains inspiring But Sellers isnt funny and The Prisoner of Zenda doesnt amount to anything more than tired reworking of musty antittiue Rudolph isnt the only prisoner who suffers in this film the audience is punished just as severely Little house in sixth year LOS ANGELES AP Not far from NBs Burbank head quarters at the MGM lot in Cul ver City is
