like being called Communists Or Socialists Same thing fair question should think First though all those who think anybody who exposes Communists for what they are is some kind of threat to the human race be warned What you read may be dangerous to your mental health For example comrade let me give you free character outline Incidentally the true pronounciation of that word is comraid not rad it was not until after its Russian form of Komrad as salute that the changed pronouncia tion was sneaked into Western culture in the twenties and thirties by Hollywood Communists and radio commentators of the same ilk Whats that Comrade Im beginning to sound like Senator McCarthy wondered how soon youd say that But lets get out of this parenthesis So heres your brief profile Mr Communist You are either campus intellectual or trade unionist As student you were probably member of any one or several Communistfront organizations of which there are hundreds such as the World Youth Congress na tional Student Union the Civil Liberties Union the League for Industrial Democracy that virteally spawned the Na tional Education Association that is working for complete control of children through its influential power in for ex ample human relations courses and so on You might have even visited Russia as representative of some left wing group You will have supported many activist causes such as civilright protests antiwar antinuclear anti Rhodesia or South Africa movements and so on You never of course raise your voice against the unspeakable atrocities committed by black terrorists or in protest against Cambodian genocide by the Communist govem ment or against Castros prisoncamp called Cuba In short you think breath and act as dedicated Com munist You weep largen salty tears for the plight of the unemployed and the oppressed masses and so on until you sound like winner of the Nobel Prize for allround kindliness charity and Godliness But do you ever whisper syllable about the plight of millions of Russian and Chinese slaves languishing in prison camps Not if you can help it you dont So Mr CommunistoftheFreeWest about the only thing you may not possess as such is Party card You may even have one for all know So lets face it you are real dyed inthewool not just printedon Communist All right Fine As we say in the West its free country Youre entitled to your belief It may be stupid belief in my opinion But fair enough for better or for worse till death do us equalize we believe what we believe You think youre right think Im ri ht iut now comes the question that puzzles the heck out of me When ask you publicly whether youre Communist you nearly blow your top with rage Your voice gets squeakier and squeakier You look at me as if Im some kind of plague virus You might even threaten me with slander or libel suit if youre an idiot that is because thats the last thing your nonidiot masters would want But you get my point do you not If you believe and act as Com munist why do you resent being called one Dont bother to answer Its because you dont want to be exposed Thats the one thing that subversives fear most exposure And you are working hard as good little subver sive arent you Yes Comrad you are indeed In govem ments school boards newspapers the CBC trade union locals The big difference between you and Conservative for example is that you fear exposure while working to tear down from within Conservative is only too happy to declare his conservatism while he works openly to build better world as he sees it Somewhere theres moral it seems to me think its one about wolf in sheeps clothing or something years old next month and theyve made big splash with The infants are catamaran passenger ferries called Sea Bus which began service June 17 1977 and their design has attracted worldwide attention in the transit industry The Wpassenger ferries op erated by British Columbia Hydro have proven popular with commuters carrying an estimated 64 million persons 35 kilometres across Burrard Inlet between residential North Vancouver and the downtown business district The ferry system was estab lished in 1974 by the former New Democratic Party govem ment to ease traffic on buses and two major bridges In more than 70000 crossings the two ferries have never missed scheduled trip for mechanical reasons The 35metrelong vessels Burrard Beaver and Burrard Otter offer 15minute serv ice across the harbor Monday through Saturday with half hour frequencies evenings Sunlt days and holidays CREW SMALL The doubleend design allows them to travel with speed and manoeuvrability in either direction avoiding costly tum around time and risk of acci dent Each vessel has crew of four master mate and two attendants Hydro says two elements of the SeaBus system closed the examiner saggy Maya5 7197779 750 circuit television security and an automatic selfservice fare box are the first of their kind in Canada The fare box issues piece of paper similar to bus transfer but with the amount paid in scribed on the back This pro vides passengers with journey and free connecting ride on land bus If passenger boards land bus first the regular transfer can be used as ticket on the Sea Bus The design of the vessels and terminals follows rail transit principles allowing passengers to board and alight quickly Hydro says up to 400 passesv ngers can leave and another 400 embark within 90 seconds Each Seartius has six sets of poweroperated double doors for simultaneous unloading on one side and loading on the other The terminals are floating modules of ore stressed rein forced concrete supporting modern metal buildings which are fully automated If the lch minals did not float Hydro says the difference in water levels at high and low tides would create considerable problems Also adjacent to the North Vancouver terminal is bus loop into which all connecting North Shore buses travel to meet passengers heading to or from the SeaHus Better business head 101 Street smack in the middle of the city He kept his office space and proceeded to build highly successful medical practice but he found the financing ex perience so interesting that he kept getting his finger in more and more ventures For the last 30 years he has maintained low public busi ness profile but his name kept popping up in connection with major business ventures the start of an independent television station the formation of Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association and next season one of the new entries in the National Hockey League and number of land transactions But Allard who gave up his medical practice in the late 19605 new plans to slow down DIFFERENT FACES His idea of slow might be another businessmans idea of stiff pace dont suppose Id ever want to retire division SOME MISTAKES He glanced at model of Lockheed Electra in one comer of his spacioUs office The Electra model and World lIloolckey Association bag are reminders humility sym Allard provided the financial backing that brought the Oilers to Edmonton Many dollars later the team was sold to Peter Pocklington and Nelson Skalbania The franchise is doing well now but Allard says sports is not his cup of tea and he is glad to be out of it He bought fleet of aging Electras from Northwest Orient Airlines hoping to make good by providing transport for the northern oil exploration boom after the Prudhoe Bay dis covery The project International Jet Air faltered on government red tape and associated problems deal to introduce the Soviet Unionbuilt Yak 40 to North America didnt pan out and now Allarcos only aircraft are two executive Jetstais But elsewhere business looks good The tour city restaurants will likely expand under the competent hands of vicepresident Morris Klimove one of number United States counterparts Wednesday that Canadian steel exports to their country are not going there through stealth or predatory practices Peter Gordon said Cana dian steel accounted for only 11 per cent of the total US steel imports last year and the amount is likely to decrease In an address prepared for delivery at New York meeting of the American Iron and Steel Institute Gordon said Canada has also been steady customer for US steel during the last 25 years but this situation is likely to change as well Our current market situation and sales forecasts indicate quick return to our traditional pattern of almost total reliance on domestic demand Our customers at home need us and we fully intend to support them to the utmost of our ability Gordon noted there has been some concern in the US about Canadas choice of 56inch pipe for its section of the Alaska Highway natural gas pipeline He said the choice of pipe size had been interpreted by some as deliberate attempt to ex clude US pipemakers from competitive biddingin Canada As prospective supplier of pipe for the Canadian section of the line might say here that Stelco did not have any prefer ence whatsoever with respect to pipe size since we were in the fortunate position of being able to produce all three sizes that were under consideration The downtown branch of the Bank of Montreal is alive with the sound of music of the bull market the has usually significantly outperformed New York However one should not put too much weight on this type of historical phenomenon unless rational explanation can be devised for it As it happens one is available that seems to justify this type of experience Within the North American economy many Canadian in dustries particularly such capital goods manufacturers as iron and steel act as marginal suppliers to the LES That is during the early stages of an economic boom the in dustries tend to make their purchases from companies In the latter stages of the boom the
