it wasnt question of who would win the Simcoe South riding The question was how wide Mitges takes riding By LORI OIIEN Of The Examiner OWEN SOUND Dr Gus Mitges reclected Progressive Conservative MP GreySimcoe Tuesday night knew hed win his riding but had no idea hed be swept into victory with 20901 votes out of possible 49436 was completely surpris ed Dr Mitges former veterinary surgeon and Owen Sound councillor said ex pected the same majority as last time which was 2700 votes would have been satisfied withthat He was pleasantly surpris ed to learn that he beat Jack Morgan liberal candidate in his home area of Meaford Although surprised he said he recalled attending an all candidates meeting in Meaford during the election where threequarters of the people there were PC supporters Morgan obtained 11191 votes Bill Proud New Democratic Party candidate 5575 votes Bill Shannon Libertarian 295 votes and Bruce Arnold Social Credit 160 votes This campaign was the most difficult of the last three federal election campaigns Dr Mitges said because of the new territory in areas such as Artemesia and Proton added on to the riding because of redistribution It was hard campaign he admitted lost 12 pounds But feel great He said addition of new areas gave him more reason to get out and meet new people He said meeting people has always been his forte JAMMEI QlARTERS Dr Mitges campaign head quarters in Owen Sound was jammed with supporters Tues day night as results from the 224 polling stations came in rapid succession Almost immediately they knew it was Dr Mitges ballgaine and he it unchallenged to become the newly elected representative for the riding ITiitiffitiiil totals from the 223 polling stations taken shortly after 10 pin gave Lewis 18805 votes well ahead of rivals Payne Bullen New Denmcratic Party with 10680 and Walter Connell Liberal with 9284 Lewis 41yearold lawyer from Orillia began the evening at his Midland campaign cen trc where he witnessed his firm lead in 13 of the first 13 polls in the Tiny and Ta Townships area as the results began pouring in shortly after 815pni By the time he arrived at his Orillia based committee room about 945 pm the PC can didate had racked up an im pressive lead with 15235 votes ahead of Bullen with 8410 and more than double the 0805 votes won by Connell Results indicated Lewis re mained almost unchallengtxl at the polls in the townships of Medonte Rama and Mara with an outright victory at each poll in the town of Midland and the city of Orillia Debbie Crawford cam paign worker for Lewis sumnir ed up the results on the board when she said We have managed to clean up pretty well Lewis was greeted by jubilant crowd of family and supporters and wasted little time before making his victory speech He attributed telegram nights highlight There were two highpoints during the evening at Ray Ramsays Liberal head quarters The first occurred at about 1030 pm when the Liberals won seven polls at and around Canadian Forces Base Borden following straight losses at Simcoe South polls all evening The other highpoint for the core group of about 20 sup porters present all evening was telegram that arrived at 11 pm from Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau Trudeaus telegram thanked unsuccessful Liberal can didates for their valiant effort in the name of the Liberal party during this difficult period in our history Ramsay says national sw ing to the Liberals was needed to turn residents in Simcoe South from their historical Con servativeleaning ITED DRAWBACKS Although he says he ran good campaign he listed few points that hurt his chances AntiTrudeau feelings in the riding and Rdn Stewarts per sonal popularity drew support away from the Liberals he says Ramsay also cited his stand on nuclear energy as main political drawback of his cam paign probably hurt myself in taking proAnuclcar stand when this is not the best political time to be proposing more nuclear energy believe the energv issue is the most critical issue we face today We have to cut back on oil and gas and felt this had to be presented he says Simcoe South Liberals lost some momentum early in the campaign by not having can didate election Stewart ended far ahead of Liberal candidate Ray Rain say his nearest competitor Unofficially Stewart compil ed 25426 votes more than twice that of Ramsay who came in at 12686 Gaye Lamb NDP candidatev wasa distant thirtlat8617 Stewart was clearly in com mand from the start jumping ahead of Ramsay by the count of 1635 to 752 after 20 polls were reported By the time 140 of 207 polls were recorded the outcome was assured as Stewart out distanced Ramsay 13093 to BESS Stewart lost only 14 polls in the riding with Gaye Laiiib winning one and Ramsay tak ing 13 One poll ended in tie Lambs
