permitted to retain the same coverage they are now allowed Owners can build to six times coverage meaning they can build six times as much floor space per lot area Planning recommendations would have reduced it to three times coverage so that more emphasis could be placed on the downtown seeder project Mayor Archer has suggested six times coverage be retained so that opposition to the project before an anticipated OMB her ing will be decreased Rick Jones city planner and Rick Bates director of planning and development are in agreement with the scheme But Ald Alex Arthur is not dont see what good it will do said Ald Arthur If we thought it was legitimate to lower it in the first place why are we changing it now The alderman sid that to lower the density because it might reduce the candidates are suitable But as far as the facts are concerned Broadbent wins hands down Unemployment and the high cost of living are certainly the issues as far as am concerned not unity ALEX ARTHUR why change now the project is very poor reasoning Ald Arthur joins Meg ODonal and Ald Fred Ruemper who are also ques tioning the strategy behind the move Ald Ruemper said he would wait judgement on lesson on American Inv dians All three items along with some 13000 others are available to them through the Simcoe County Board of Educations In structional Media Centre where artists and film librarians work to meet the demands of system making increasing use of teaching aids As far as we know this is the only one centre in Ontario that will produce any teaching aid for teacher or principal on re quest says Fred Robinson himself an ar tist and head of the centre Robinson had been doing similar job with the Barrie District Secondary School Association before the countys local boars and committees became the countywide boar that exists today MATERIAL PROVIDED The centre can provide material for classes from kindergarten through grade 13 that range from simple designs and flash cards to intricate technical drawings for courses on modern technology We try and aim for the best Robinson says If you have the best that can be pro duced in the classroom the children will learn more easily The centres staff will help teachers prepare art work do research for the and most importantly produce material created and made originally by our staff Robinson says The desire for teaching aids has expanded and the aids themselves have become more sophisticated he says Things have chang ed so much Part of the centres function is to conduct workshops in the countys schools that make teachers familiar with the possibilities Often we spend whole afternoon into the evening with workshop recommending and demonstrating what material may be used in their course plan Robinson says The centre located in the former Barrie public school board building at Grove and St Vincent Streets also houses darkroom for use by students and teacher alike MAINTAINED JOINTLY Not the least of Robinsons responsibility is film library maintained jointly by the Simcoe board the countys separate school board and the Base Borden association Some 2000 films are available to all three organizations at any time Robinson says Theyre not held to one type of material he says of the teachers They can have choice range of possibilities tends to broaden everyones scope Robinson says 328 of the Ontario public service employees union OPSICUi is asking for an in crease in wages pliis additional benefits in the dental plan and holidays The union has been without contract since March 31 The 28 members include public works employees and office and technical personnel Bill Scott local president Kellie Nolan dont think it really makes much difference who gets in they will all be the same have always voted for the NDP and would like to see them get in this time havent really been following the campaign closely but think its time for change Weve had enough of theLiberals claims two meetings with the committee accomplished nothing The offer from the commit tee was insultineg low he said Tuesday The town is not coming across with anything The way look at it negotia tions ncvcr started Last week Larry Duffy representing the outside workers and Grant Bruce negotiators for OISEU met with the council committee The next step in the labor dispute is conciliation and if nothing is resolved strike or arbitration would follow The cost for an arbitration What do ou think theresult of Tuesdays federal election McVeigh In this area unemployment is pro bany the main issue in the campaign 0n the television debate think Broadbent made the most points and Clark lost the most The NDP Will gain more seats this time but the final out come will be Liberal minority govemment hearing could be $20000 strike means Midlanders would be without bylaw of ficer building and construction inspector street cleaners and if it drags into the winter snow removal service dont think anyone wants to go on strike Scott said He said he imagined the negotiations would be difficult but didnt think there would be complete negativism to everything Reeve Sam Ancio denied Scotts charges saying negotia tions had been dealt with fairly Perhaps conciliation is the answer he said Let Roy alwell It is goingto be nip and tuck between the two older parties to see who gets it The NDP will pick up more seats than they have now but they will never form government During the teleylsion debate Clark didnt get riled up at all but the other two did thought Broadbcnt was kind of wild
