in 1939 was in my midteens too young to get into uniform and just old enough to feel the agonies of frustration at not being able to get over there where could personally put an end to the career of one Adolph Hitler remember watching with envy as friends who were just couple of years older than suddenly appeared in uniforms of one kind or another magic ally transformed from unem ployed products of the Depres sion into romantic men of the military Gone were the ragged pat ched clothes that had always seen them wear gone were the slouchedover postures and hangdog hopeless faces Overnight these boys had be come marching men with straight backs andchins held high as they clicked their heels and walked proudly in pairs along the sidewalks of Com mercial St in Glace Bay just about the only concrete side walk in the whole town at that time PRAIRIE SHIP Max Braithwaite has caught all the mood and the ex citement of those early days of the 193945 war in mar vellously funny book about the experiences of Robin Evelyn First novel tells horror tale ALTERED STATES By Paddy Chaycfsky Bantam $225 Reviewed by STEPHEN GAUER Paddy Chayefskys first novel just released in paper back is flawed foray into the science fiction genre Chaycf sky an Oscarwinning screen writer Hospital and Network has written supercharged and provocative book that ex trapolatcs contemporary knowledge about biology and psychology into horror tale about the hazards of scientific experiments The central character in the book is Edward Jessup brilliant American psychophsiologist A5 Altered States opens in the mid 19605 Jessup is conducting ex periments in sensory depriva tion for the air force using isolation tanks to test the reac tion of volunteers to long periods in total silence and darkness The novel then traces Jessups scientific career through the 19605 and 19705 as he displays his temperamental brilliance in university research into the workings of Francis Diespecker of Wabagoon Sask entitled The Commodores Barge Is Alongside McClelland and Stewart pages $295 Dink Diespecker as he prefers to be known because he hates the names his parents gave him joins the Royal Cana dian Naval Volunteer Reserve RCNVR in the dustbowl that was the Canadian West at that time His ship is converted ga rage that has been christened HMCS Porpoise It is run with all the spit and polish of man war in His Majestys Royal Navy by group of officers who have never seen an ocean wave They know about traditions though and they kmow that the Navy is the senior service and woe betide scruffy rating who dares besmirch the name of Nelson Poor old Dink becomes the unfortunate one to do just that and from page one to 191 we find ourselves living inside his skin as he tries to cope with misfortune and get on the list that will have him transferred from HMCS Porpoise to real ship and the real war INNOCENT TIME loved this book and could literally not put it down till finished it It brought back so vividly those first days of in human telligencc Along the way he meets an equally brilliant anthropologist named Emily who falls in love with Jessup and eventually marries him Jcssups research leads him to Mexico where he cx pcriences powerful drug used in Indian religious rites He takes samples of the drug back to Harvard and discovers their ability when used with isola tion tanks to cause evolu tionary regression in humans That regression turns Jessup into someting of modern Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde cant and in memory Writers find peace at Saratoga estate SARATOGA SPRINGS NY Reuter It is only one se cluded estate in the middle of playground for the rich but it has seen the birth of some of the centurys most popular books in the United States The place is known simply as Yaddo and most James Bald MOVIE DRAMA 55 The win Sylvia Plath Malcolm Conley Carson McCullers all have been Yaddo guests at least once since the first group of writers came in 1926 Yaddo is place unlike any other in Saratoga Springs where Americas old money comes every summer for horse racing during the day and posh parties at night The social elite are here to be seen but Yaddos writers come for precious privacy They labor in unpretentious rooms receiving no visitors telephone calls or attention They are not pampered they lunch on meals silently left at the door of their rooms Onc frequent guest calls it luxurient concentration camp and others agree Yaddo they say offers an isolation that money just cant buy The people there un derstand what writers need to write says Cheever Pulitzer Prizewinning writer nocence in the Second World War when sailors soldiers and airmen trained in conveted ga rages by day and slept in their fathers homes at night because there were still no barracks for them It brought back all those ea ger young faces revelling in the service life mainly because for all of them it was first job and somebody was payingthem for something And it brought back those first uniforms which were bits and pieces of uniforms left over from another war to end all watts that had ended just 20 years before But mainly amid all the laughter and fun of Max Braith waites skilful and evocative storytelling it made me re member those friends who were just couple of years older than who managed to enlist and whose names were among the first to appear in our local newspaper as killed in ac tion hope Mr Braithwaite is go ing to follow up on Dink Diespecker and his adventures after Wabagoon and HMCS Porpoise This boy deserves sequel Bill McNeil is BC Radio host and author of Voice Of The Pioneer published recently by Macmillan Th0mson News Service reveal any more without spoil ing the climax of Altered States except to say that Chaycfksy has written gripp ing story that holds your atten tion from start tofinish Thc climax of his horror talc strains belief but it enables Chaycfsky to display his skill at writing exciting dialogue Words stream out of Chaycksys characters just as fluidly as in the movies he writes The problem with the novel is his excessive use of technical jargon and language Chaycf sky has obviously done his homework in researching the scientific background of his story but he cluttcrs the dialogue and narrative flow by introducing confusing technical terms and expressions Aside from that fault and an unsatisfying climax Altered
