DISCOURAGED and the jazzy Harlmen Noc turne by Earl Hagen but the highlight of the concert was the two solo numbers Brodie played The first saxophone arrange ment of Bachs first cello suite offered proof why Brodie is so hiighly regarded around the world The Bach suite is tremendous challenge for cellists when the suite is played on monophonic instru rodi aEling of collegiate ment like the saxophone it becomes virtually impossible TECHNICAL FACILITY But Brodie bring such technical facility to his music pouring out notes reaching down for bass notes and then soaring up through the upper register that he makes the im possible sound possible He cant hide the difficulty of the faster movements in the suite but he manages to carry off the illusion that Bachs music can be performed on the the way Brodie plays it Nodas work is intriguing in spite of itself In the three ensemble numbers played with the Col legiate Band Brodies tone was always rich and full Brodie doesnt just play the notes he caresses them In work like the Harlem Nocturne he creates such strong sense of mood that youre carried back to the 19305 when Harlem was the centre of black music in America EXCELLENT TONE The Collegiate Band directed by Morley Calvert played 11 numbers during the concert Im impressed by their excellent tone always strong and full and by their disciplined approach to music The band excels at music written specifically for brass and woodwinds the arrange ment of the first movement of Schubert symphony by contrast was less impressive The Sousa march the Reed pascacglia and the other uptempo works enabled the band to show off their confident ensemble play ing DON WAIT SUBSCRIBE NOW There are still some good season tickets left to The Gryphons IM Great New Show Season Dont
