1oa the examiner Friday May 113070 Killer of the cloth THE FIRST OF TWO PARTS Over the years Montreal has been the scene of many notorious murders In recent years mobsters have perpetrated horrendous mass killings but none of them compare to todays tale of mayhem This particular crime has the dubious distinction of being Montreals and quite possibly Canadas most sensational murder It happened long ago but is still recalled by old timers who remember the headlines and speculation which kept the good citizens of La Belle Province talking about little else for almost three years You see the principal character and the man who eventually stood trial for murder not once but three times was Roman Catholic priest To my knowledge Father Adelard Delorme is the only priest who has ever stood trial for murder in Canada Early on Saturday morning Jan 1922 James Higgin botham and Elric Larin trudged through the crisp Montreal snow toward shack on the corner of Colebrook and Snowdon Sts Both men worked for the city and the shack contained their tools As they walked they caught sight of the crumpled form of man lying in the snow There was no doubt that he was dead The mans overcoat was saturated with blood and was fastened around his head with pins Underneath the overcoat was quilt like material which also covered the head The two city employees summoned the police who were at the scene in matter of minutes Investigating officers noted that the snow under the body had not melted in dicating that the victim probably was dead and cold before being placed where he had been found Upon searching the body officers discovered letters addressed to Raoul Delorme 190 St Hubert St Montreal No bullet holes The body was removed to the city morgue The coat was quiltlike material was unwrapped from the head revealing six bullet wounds The victims hands were securely tied together with cord There were no bullet holes in his over coat When officers called at 190 St Hubert St they en countered Roman Catholic priest Father Adelard Delorme Police accompanied him to the morgue to View the body Father Delorme tearfully and regretfully identified the victim as his halfbrother Raoul Father Delorme explained that his halfbrother was commerce student at the University of Ottawa and was at home on vacation The priest became enraged when he was informed that someone had bound his brothers hands and 600 860 NEws POLKA DoT DOOR NBC NEws wednesday namesucnwnorouowaontmnomebutwhenhe discovers his pet lifeless Morks in the dol drums until Mother Nature springs happy WMTHE MUPPETS coroners inquest was conducted into the death of Raoul Delorme Father Delorme was the prin cipal witness He explained his familys history Adelard Delormes father had been wealthy contractor who died leaving an estate of over $160000 The estate con sisting mainly of several properties located in Montreals east end was left to six relatives The largest portion by far had been left to Raoul who received an income in excess of $10000 per year from the properties Father Delorme administered his late fathers estate and took care of Raouls income as well In fact Raoul was at tending the University of Ottawa solely to become equipped in the ways of finance in order to handle his own affairs upon graduation At the inquest some curiousity was expressed as to why Father Delorme did not have regular parish He readin disclosed the details Delorme was born in Ste Anne des Plaines Que After attending the village school he entered Ste Therese College and then studied theology at Montreals Grand Seminary on Sherbrooke St Appointed Vicar At the time of the murder he was thirtyseven years old having been ordained for some years Father Delorme had been appointed vicar of the Ste Anne des Plaines Church in 1915 and later was transferred again as vicar to the church at Tetreaultville near Montreal This latter move had been made at his own request as his fathers death and his posi tion as sole executor of the estate made it imperative for him to be located near Montreal Father Delorme explained that after year he found he could not properly attend to the affairs of the parish as well as his fathers estate He requested special dispensation to change positions once more Permission was granted and he became chaplain of LAssistance Publique This enabled him to administer his fathers estate On the evening of Jan Raoul phoned his brother from downtown Montreal He informed Father Delorme that he was staying downtown for supper and planned on visiting theatre with friends Raoul also mentioned that if he didnt return by 1130 he would not be coming home that night When he made that call Raoul didnt know it but he only had hours to live Later that night Father Delorme stated that he had bert Hall with the 100 member London Phil harmonic Orchestra9 3° FREETIME POLITICAL TELECAST 1000 THE ROPERS Helen marches Stanley to marriage counselor after she incident to the phone company Later phone company officials stated that they had no record of his complaint Two days into the inquest with detectives working around the clock checking out every possible clue Father Delorme turned over 25 calibre Bayard automatic revolver to them He stated that he kept it in his car for protection Nor mally he used his late fathers old weapon but by coin cidence few days before the murder he had traded in his old weapon for his present one Raoul had been shot with 25 calibre weapon On Wed Jan 11th the funeral services for Raoul Delorme were conducted at St James Church in downtown Montreal Father Delorme celebrated the requiem mass The Coroners inquest was delayed several times in order to exammine new evidence which was constantly being un covered by the police In the meantime Father Delorme issued statements which were extremely newsworthy under the circumstances Every word he uttered was conscien tiously reported in the daily press Public Execution few days after the funeral Father Delorme announced that he was posting $10000 reward for the arrest and con viction of the murderer He duly deposited this amount in the Bank of Hochelaga Father Delorme was full of an nouncements He also stated that once the murderer was convicted he should be publicly executed at local outdoor skating rink Such proclamations were not becoming to man of the cloth When it was learned that Father Delorme was the main beneficiary of Raouls will suspicion openly fell upon the priest It seemed impossible but as the days woreon more and more circumstantial evidence pointed to Father Delorme as the murderer It couldnt be Nothing like this had ever happened in Montreal before Saving souls yes Saving lives yes But priest murderer There had to be some other explanation Father Delorme kept spewing quotable quotes He likened himself to his Savior and compared the slanderous remarks made about him to those hurled at Jesus Christ during his last days on earth At precise pm on Feb 14 1922 Father Delorme was arrested and charged with the murder of his halfbrother Raoul Delorme Mxt week CONCLUSION UR ONIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTING
