prepared by Phil lips and introducing what may become new style of playing Shakespeare year ago Phillips talked of searching for new advance in classical theatre He was inter ested in drawing from the students from the Barrie area have won scholarships at the 2lst an nual Orillia Kiwanis Music Festival The winners were announc ed Wedneday night during the Festival of Stars concert at the Orillia Opera House Lynn Langford 16year old Central Collegiate stu dent won two scholarships $50 piano scholarship and $25 scholarship for wood winds Miss Langford won in the music festival Timothy Lee of Barrie and Peter Mika of Stroud also won $50 piano scholar ships Four students won $25 scholarships for piano Michelle Harper of Midhurst Rachel Keung of Barrie Lin da Mika of Stroud and Todd Sinclair of Churchill Instrumental scholarship winners included Mike Bax ter of Painswick who won $25 for harmonica for woodwinds and Jamie Warrington of Barrie who won $25 scholarship for euphonium The Festival of Stars con cert featured crosssection of outstanding competitors from the twoweek music festival Representing the Barrie ara in the concert were Lynn Langford and Jody Evans who played woodwind duet Timothy Lee who played piano and centrating attention fully on the actors Four other women are direct ing productions this season Francis Hyland will direct Alan Scarfe in Shakespeares Othello Pam Brighton will di rect Federico Garcia Lorcas Yerma Kathryn Shaw recently appointed artistic director of Westcoast Actors in Vancouver will do Victoria all opening in August and Pamela Hawthorn will direct Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew at the Third Stage in July Seven Shakespearean plays are being done including Henry IV Parts and II directed by Peter Moss USTINOV IN LEAD In October Peter Ustinov will come to the festival to play the lead in King Lear directed by Phillips running until the close of the festival Nov making it about the longest season the festival has had Phillips said that when he came here the 1100seat down town Avon Theatre was in dan ger of being closed But he re vitalized it by producing more and bigger productions there making it the equal of the Performances of the Passacaglia won the Challenge Trophy at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival the Interna tional Trophy at the CNE and gold medal at the Kerkrade Holland music festival in 1974 Other works on the program include the first movement of Schuberts Unfinished Sym phony Spirit of Pageantry by Percy Fletcher an arrange ment of scottish songs medley of familiar Hollywood show tunes and
