Grantham all won their class at the North In vitational Pentathalon beating opponents from schools inthe Georgian Bay area Llewellyn North student won the midget boys division defeating Paul Gautier of Eastview who placed second Competing against Ontario track and field standards Llewellyn accumulated 2206 points to beat Gautier who finished with 2064 Both Of The Examiner It wasnt exactly major coup for Canadian International hockey when the Haggis Bashers bashed the BandyLegged Wee Laddies 127 Sunday at Canadian Forces Base Bordens Andy Anderson arena Nothe Challenge Cup that $13000 hunk of some Hockey Canada promoters scheming mind is still collecting dust in some dank trophy case in Moscow But rest assured all ye hockey faithful its still quite ob vious we can beat the Scots For now The winners tagged with the unflattering Haggis Bashers label were the CFB Borden Braves oldtimers The losers were the Scottish Oldtimers AllStars Never mind that the Scots won their first game of their Canadian Oldtimers exhibition tour 42 over Nobleton Lets forget about that one Lets forget about Nobleton We beat them okay The Base beat them and that means We beat them But theres still something wrong Something that bothered me about the way the Scots reacted to loss like that something that sur faced during the brief fl ing that followed knew what it was the way their faces lit up knew before Ron McKen zie 20yearold oldtimer who was there because NM up there arent many oldtimers in Scotland af THE HAGGIS CUP firmed my darkest horror They were learning Yes spoke McKenzie and you could see it all unfold before his eyes were learning fast the game is growing fast we like this no bodycontact and emphasis on skills He nodded trembled And Im going back to help things out to try to get this hockey going with the young lads Listen Canada Stop it already Dont tell them any more Lets build big fence around the country and yell to them that we dont know damn thing about hockey Oh but it wont do any good It wouldnt be long before some shrewd mind in Ottawa dreams up another Cup series The Haggis Cup st ON THIS DAY In 1964 two decisions knockout and technical knockout were the results of the first four bouts in the Cen tral and Southwestern Ontario Boxing Championship and Olympic Trials held at Barrie arena The only local entry in the event was Orillis Walter Henry who captured the bantamweight crown with unanimous decision over Don Ferguson of Brantford Rick Fraser now sports scribe with major Toronto tabloid was sports editor of The Examiner back then Fraser was not impressed with the turnout at the impor tant competition saying Arena manager Wes Alsopp could have put the entire crowd in his office and had room left over Barrie concluded Fraser has to be considered one of the toughest spots to promote sports What You mean theres no more boxing gttl SO THATS WHY Its always good idea to check the Winning Post Positions rundown in your raceway program before you go scampering to your lucky window with handful of curren cy Almost always The last Barrie Raceway Program breaks it all down nice and easy except the figures dont add up to 140 or the 14 cards from Jan through March 28 Unfortunately the number of races total 200 Of course it really doesnt matter unless you can calculate percentages and youre in hurry Any good racegoer surely knows that post position four wins more than 31 per cent of the time in an eighthorse field fit PLEASE BLUE PLEASE Listen dog you better be right tonight or master Don is going to seek out and open Hockey Night In Canadas Over time studio and snarl at you for whole hour with no com mercial breaks Actually dont think Boston Bruins coach Don Cherry should be consulting his bull terrier Blue in such an impor tant series In the next one maybe But not this one DONT THINK ABOUT THIS IN YOUR BACKSWING Just to make everyone feel good about their golf game let it be known that Nancy Lopez makes 30 bucks every time she swings golf club Now dont listen to that crow hollering at you from thetree till QUOTE OF THE WEEK Houston Open golf tournament that was converted to 460 yard par by moving the tee few National Hockey League semifinal series meet ing with Boston Bruins Its wrong to expect the game will start off the same way the last one ended said Bowman referring to Mon treals 51 victory at home Sat urday night giving the Cana diens 32 lead in the bestof seven series and pushing the Bruins to the brink of elimina tion cant see any reason the Bruins will forget about playing hockey The homeice advan tage is very important in the playoffs and they wont want to lose it We get 25 per cent of our goals on the power play and we score once in every three power plays The Bruins dont want to give us chances like that Centre Doug Risebrough of the Canadiens was sidelined when he suffered broken nose in thirdperiod fight Saturday night with Bostons Terry OReilly leaving Bowman seeking replacement for the rest of the current series and for at least the start of the final if Montreal gets past Boston CONSIDERS SHUFFLE We have several possi bilities Bowman noted Right winger Guy outings ear lier In the fourth game in Bos ton we had an excellent first period On Saturday we played well right through the game We have to give the effort for 60 minutes You have to do that in the playoffs especially against team like Boston having trouble Rangers favored Isles not out yet NEW YORK CP The young the middleaged and the old will try to prove tonight that miracles can happen on 33rd Street Everybody wants to see New York team in the final says Carol Vadnais the veteran Rangers defenceman While bookmakers established the Rangers as slight favorites over the Islanders for the sixth game of their Stanley Cup semifinal its still tossup to many Ob servers Its shame there has to be loser says centre Phil Espo sito of the Rangers Were not counting those guys out says Esposito Theyre great hockey team and weve got to be careful and play like weve done in the whole series And if we do that and work hard cant see us losing The Rangers have surprised even their own rabid fans win ning two of the three games on Islanders ice to take 32 lead in the bestofseven National Hockey League series victory at Madison Square Garden tonight would send the Rangers to the final for the first time since 1972 Its been series with lot of heart says Vadnais who at 33 is the secondoldest Ranger Were much more mature team now Vadnais says You cant play hockey unless youre fit Watt By DAVII FULLER Of The Examiner saw Helmut Balderis one of the greatest hockey players in the world get tongue lashing and have to sit on the bench once said Tom Watt coach of the University of Toronto Blues hockey team Then the Soviet coach Tikanov benched him for keeping the puck little too long The point Watt was trying to make to guests at the Barrie Minor Hockey Association annual banquet Monday was that the Soviets stress team play and give little play to the individual One of the reasons Watt says the Soviets hockey team is currently the best in the world Watt described the Soviet method of playing fiveman units and changing those units together rather than having separate forward and defensive units as in the North American Professional leagues They never emphasize the individual Watt said always the team Watt stressed three things in his prescription for the North American brand of hockey Conditioning is the number one thing he said Not everyone can be hockey player so we should be getting them to become athletes first good athlete can play any sport Watt suggested coaches and trainers try to impress on players the need to be physically fit You just cant play this game if youre not fit he said More practice ranked second in Watts list of priorities for hockey in Canada dont know if this idea is catching on Watt said but in Toronto now teams are advertising how much practice time they are offering Watt himelf level five coach said he is supporter of the National Coaches certification program Ive coached for 20 years he said and Im just now starting to learn about coaching Veteran coaches who scorn the program draw little sym pathy from Watt who also spent most of his career learning by trial and error We set rigid standards for those who teach our kids in school he said minor league coaches have just as much influence over the kids as teachers if not more Watt said coaches should learn all they can about the job of coaching in order to give the young players the undamen tal skills hockey fans now agree are lacking in Canadian hockey The facts of light OnlyTrilight has 60 calories Check the label on your light beer and see
