square dancers in one school for nine hours on Saturday afternoon Give them music caller and plenty of room and be prepared for one of the happiest spectacles youll see this side of the barn door Thats the way it was at Barrie North Collegiate on the weekend during the 11th annual Barrie Promenade when square dance enthusiasts came from across the province to practise what they knew and pick up the latest of the 2000 modern square dance calls from the experts Ladies in brightly colored skirts over big fluffy crinolines whirled and twirled as their gentlemen swang promenaded and do sa doed them across the floor When the tempo was particularly lively it was hard to find set without eight smiling faces even when the callers instructions came so fast and got so confusing groups had to square their sets and wait impatiently until they could join in again Story photos by Lori Cohen Of The Examiner The first Barrie Promenade was held in 1969 to raise money so the city could preserve the site of Sunnidale Park Glen McLean chairman of this years Promenade commit tee said the dancers had so much fun the first year they decided to make it an annual fling Every year tickets for the event are sold out far in ad vance and he says the organizing committee only stops sell ing them when building capacity regulations say whoa Dancers at the Promenade generally come from modern square dance clubs McLean says modern square dancing has more calls and more difficult moves than traditional country and western dancing The dancers were divided into expert intermediate and beginner groups with the majority of dancers in the expert range Money from this years Promenade goes to promoting square dancing in the area and recruiting new members to the three sponsoring dance clubs in the Barrie area Beaux and Belles Heritage Squares and Square Timers Anyone who ever thought square dancing was mildly in teresting need only have watched the partipants on Satur day to realize that having people use evergreens in these parts dont know as like deciduous shrubs equally as well it is likely because of the long winters we have when bit of green looks good Actually they are mostly buried in snow anyhow Remember when planting not to plant within at least two feet of the house foundation The shrubs may look small now but they will grow so give them room You will find variety of shades of green gold and blue in our evergreens The Japanese yews are dark green and one of our hardiest shrubs Mugho pine and cedars are dark green The Mountbatten juniper is bluish green as is the Meyer juniper both are upright Among the spreading junipers ld told Juniper tJuniperous Thinensisi is one of the best Dont forget Euonymous for variety and color They are quite hardy in Barrie will stand being pruned back severely and come in plain green silver and gold All three varieties may be seen growing on the rockery at Barries Royal Victoria Hospital Almost every shrub or tree that can be grown hre may now be seen at the Sunnidale arboretum in Barrie and if any are not very hardy Norman Synnott the arboretum chairman will tell you Phone 72825333 if you are thinking of blue spruce consider the size it will become and never plant in front of your home as it will eventually hide it Plant it to one side There is an even bluer spruce out now called Hoopsi Most of the lluc spruces you see around are either Kostcror Colorado spruce beautiful evergreen tree is Abies oncolor fir The foliage in the spr ing is gorgeous needles are long and soft and silvery blue it makes an excellent specimen tree Hefore you plant any shrub or tree do make sure you have good soil Dont expect it to grow in hardpacked soil filled with brick and mortar and the builders leftovers Dig your hole plenty big enough for the roots to Spread Your plant will come bailed and burlaped If you cant plant it at once hill it in Some people dont untie the burlap do when plant it also put some good snips in the bottom of the burlap to let the roots free easier Be sure you leave no air pockets when plant ing and water well Landscaping your home is real investment that will pay good dividends while you lye in it it and even more when you come to sell SOCIETY NEWS Thursday is an open meeting at the Barrie Golf and Coun try Club Since there are lovely surroundings and an ex cellent speaker on timely topic we
