Photo Better treatment for burn victims Scientists deVelop synthetic skin LEIPZIG East Germany Reuter East German doc tors and scientists have devel oped new synthetic skin which they say offers better and cheaper treatment for victims of serious burns Called syspurderm the mate rial already has been tested on more than 200 patients in East Germany and Czechoslovakia with spectacular results It should be in full production shortly The skin is the result of three year cooperative effort by doc tors at Leipzig Universitys medical department and re searchers at East Germanys Schwarzheide chemical works Onetwentieth of an inch thick syspurderm is not per manent skin replacement but kind of highly efficient bandage helping deep wounds mend quickly for successful skin grafts which in turn can lead to full recovery With deaths from burn in juries topping 60000 year in the developed world and vic tims of disfigurement running into hundreds of thousands it could point to significant breakthrough in the relatively cheap treatment of one of medi cines most complex and criti cal problems CUTS FLUID LOSS The plastic skin fulfills three vital functions in helping the in jury heal by drawing off and reducing fluid loss preventing bacteria from reaching the wound and encouraging the de velopment of new tissue vital for the success of graft For 20 years doctors have agreed that the best treatment for severe burns is to cut out the damaged flesh in an operation and cover the open wound with some kind of temporary skin to fool the body into producing sprouts of tissue While the bodys biological functions finally would reject foreign skin covering trans plant of the patients own skin can be carried out with com plete success and minimal out ward disfigurement once these tissues have reached certain stage of development For long time the favored temi orary coverings were fresh pig skin the flesh of calf fetuses or fresh or deepfrozen skin from human corpses All had major disadvantage none could absorb the large amounts of fluid released by fresh wound or remove dead cells and infection Con sequently they slowed down and sometimes would impede healthy recovery of the body cells Tougher management urged in areas of nuclear power OTTAWA CP Science Council of Canada report has called for tougher management in all areas of nuclear power The recentlyreleased back ground document An Over view of the Ionizing Radiation Hazard in Canada says central regulating agency open to the public should be set up to monitor and rule on all aspects of human exposure to radiation It is not an Official position pa per The Atomic Energy Control Board known as AECB now is the licensing and regulating au thority for all aspects of the nu clear industry Jack Basuk council adviser who coordinated the report says the board should not have the power to regulate the nu clear industry because it is also charged with licensing nuclear plants There appears to be built in conflict of interest he said suspect they are perceived as being in bed with the pro nuclear people Rather than give the board more authority as first recom mended in his report Basuk suggested the radiation protec tion branch of the health de I28 BROCK ST nIIIIII II HARDYGLENWOODS MOTHERS DAY WAREHOUSE SALE TRAYS PLACE MATS RECIPE BOOKS AT REDUCED PRICES OPEN THURS FRI MAY 3rd 4th to 900 pm including ac cidental exposure and covering former employees in the nuclear and uranium mining industry establishment of corpo ration responsible for the safe disposal of all waste at nuclear sites The report which Basuk says is already slightly outofdate was compiled more than year ago For example proposals also call for occupational and emer gency exposure limits How ever the AECB is examining new radiation exposure stand ards for emergency conditions The new limits would be lighter for accidents most likely to occur but less stringent for those with low probability board spokesman said the accidents least likely to happen involve breakdown in the sys tem as well as failure of safety mechanism Such an ac BARRIE cident is likely to occur once in 3000 years special working group has proposed increasing the radio active limits to 100 rems in stead of 25 rems in the amount person could absorb at one time In case of accidents more likely to occur it is proposed that the amount of radioac tivity be reduced to 05 rems Syspurderm is made up of two compressed layers The coarsegrained lower part which is pressed tightly to the wound draws off secretions cleans the damaged area re duces fluid loss and stimulates tissue growth The finepored upper layer of soft plastic foam allows air to penetrate to the wound and ac celerate healing but at the same time blocks the paths of germs and prevents the escape of plasma The reduction of fluid loss is itself of crucial importance as continued seepage of an injury can lead to serious loss of minerals and protein and slow down the healing process Syspurderm also is reported to be efficient in treating in fected injuries We found that with regular changing syspurderm drew off all the bacteria poisonous se cretions and dead cells and after about five days the wound was ready to be prepared for normal pregrafting treat ment spokesman for Schwartheide says The synthetic skin which is cut out to the exact shape of the injury and fixed with tapes contains no medication it achieves its results purely be cause of its structure TESTED 0N PIGS Researchers subjected 23 pigs which have similar skin structure to humans to total of 290 burn wounds to test syspurderms healing powers They found that if left in place for up to 18 days the from metal drink carts and encloses an acre of Hoskins property Hoskins says he constantly makes repairs to damage done by wind plastic covering was drawn in and fixed fast by the animals tissue as if it was real flesh un til finally the normal organic rejection functions began to op erate For treatment of hospital patients the covering has to be removed every one or two days and it can be painful proc ess The first couple of times the patient usually has to be anesthetized because the syn thetic skin is already held firm by sprouting tissue the spokesman says Grafting of the patients own skin can take place on average after just six days resulting in the patient spending shorter period in the hospital In the 200 test cases carried out in nine clinics there was no single case of infection or any kind of side effect from the use of sypurderm All subsequent skin grafts were loopercent successful Schwarzheide said Not exam stress he says LETHBRIDGE Alta CP People take for granted that university students are under the greatest psychological and emotional stress during the weeks leading up to final exam inations But University of Leth bridge counsellor says the opposite is true most of the problems come in the slack months such as early October and early January During lull when theyve come to focus on themselves is when the trouble starts says Joel Brass crisis counsellor for the university When students are busy aca demically they dont have time to dwell on personal problems or else they forget them com pletely he says World first air roof HALIFAX CP Raising the massive stainlesssteel roof at Dalhousie Universitys new recreation centre here was as easy as inflating balloon In less than 15 minutes the 125Aacre sheet of welded stain less steel rose entirely under the power of air pressure pro vided by the buildings gigantic ventilation fans Dalhousie officials say it is the worlds first airsupported metal roof Stainless steel sheets 116 of an inch thick were shop welded into pieshaped sections as large as tennis courts and then rolled up like carpets and ship ped to the job site There they were joined by welding them to springy stainless steel ex pansion joints and anchored to the top perimeter of the wall The ventilation fans must maintain the air pressure or the roof deflates into concave shape Even then the design al lows the roof to stay firmly an chored to the walls Its high strength stainless steel could even support heavy snow loads The unique design by Sinoski Engineering Ltd of Willowdale Ont provides clear span of 40 metres by 76 metres without any of the columns or steel trusses that clutter buildings of similar size As construction progresses lights and domed ceiling of thermal and acoustic insulation will be suspended from the roof The combined physical education recreation and athletic centre is scheduled
