murdered and had pretty good idea who killed her The case was bizarre in many ways said Inspec tor Bill Perrin of the Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Ierrin now operates out of the AntiRackets Branch but for years was attached to the Criminal Investigation Branch were he was in charge of many of On tarios strange murder cases None was stranger than that of Viola Leahy The Leahy farm is situated alotig RR Lakefield Ont and has been in the Leahy family for as long as anyone can remember certainly four or five generations Jim Leahy worked hard on the farm atid supplemented his income by operating heavy excavation equipment Viola his wife of over twentyfive years also had interests which drew her away from the farm Before her marriage she had received formal training as Registered Nursing Aide vocation she continued to follow after she became Mrs Leahy Both Jim and Viola had independent natures and this independent bent combined with their physical absence from each other drove wedge intoan otherwise normal relationship Viola iti particular craved sortie sort of social life She enjoyed taking in the local dances and sometimes visited tavern with her friend Emgard Woodmck although she never drank anything stronger than soft drink The long standing marriage dcletotraled utitil finally in 1972 Viola separated from Jim for while For some reason she changed her mind and returned to live with lim but things were never the same Viola supported herself Jim did likewise They conversed only when necessary Viola continued to cook and wash Jims clothing They slept in separate rooms Each Friday Viola would leave the farm and visit with IImgard She always returned on Monday And so month after month year after year the strained lives of Viola and Jim Ieahy continued BIZARRE IISAIIllRNF Jims brother Emmett worked farm directly south of the Ixahy farm After Jim suffered fractured skull iii farm accident in 1973 IImmett and his four sons gave him helping hand with the chores Because of the coolness which existed bet ween husband and wife Viola came to depend great deal on her brother and sisterinIaw Jack and Zetta Ixreson She phoned them every day If she wanted to go anywhere it was the Leesons who picked her tip anrl brought her back to the farm On Friday Sept IT 1976 Viola was taken by Jack to Peterborough to stay with her friend Emgard Two days later lini was ad mitted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto to have bone chips removed from his skull Away from the farm from Sept until his return frotn Sunnybrook on Oct he was never to see his wife again On Monday Sept 20th the Leesons picked Viola up at IImgards ano gave her lift to her doctors office then drove Viola back to the farm They helped the sixtyfive year old woman into the house with her luggage and left about pm It was the last time they would ever see Viola Next day Zetta Leeson tried to reach Viola 0n the phone without stieccss tn Iulnesday Zetta and Iack drove over to the farm They found Violas luggage exactly where they had placed it the previous Monday There were several cigarette butts in art ashtray This bothered the Leesons as they knew that neither Viola nor Jim smoked On Thursday they notified Ilrnmetl Leahy that Viola could not be located On Saturday Viola was reported missing to the Peter borough Detachment of the WP During the preliminary investigation into the missing persoiiss case the WP turned up three pieces of information which were later to prove of the utmost significance Iavil Ramsay had cleaned the furnace of the Leahy home on Sept 22 The only person he had come in contact with on the property was young Ralph Leahy Emmetts I9yearold son Ramsay stated the boy seemed to be lurking near an open barn door when he spot tod him Ramsay was interested in getting so meone to sign his bill indicating that the work on the furnace had been completed Ile thought it odd that when he approached Ralph with the bill the boy said Im suppos ed to be here Ralph signed the bill Another puzzler was Emmett eahys statement that although he was taking care of his missing sisterinlaws mail it seemed to disappear after entering his house Iack Zetta and Emmett remembered that when they searched the house on the 23rd of Sept Ralph had mentioned that he had seen Viola at about am on Sept He thought she was heading for the bus The investigation continued Jim Leahy came home on Oct 3rd into the midst of an active investigation into his wifes disap most foul pearance All of iolas personal effects were found in the house More and more it becatne apparent that she had met with foul play Two weeks went by The Lakefield post master received an unusual piece of mail It was Change of Address Notice apparent ly signed by Viola Leahy directing her mail to theSudbury Post Office General Delivery Turned over to the II they quickly established that the signature on the card was not Violas It was forgery In the meantime young Ralph left to seek employment in Edmonton Alta The police checked his handwriting against the signature on the card and established that It had been forged by Ralph ep Iiisp Smith and onstable Kata always felt that Viola Ieahy had been murdered Despite snide insinualions that she had taken off with man neither policeman believed it to be true They flew to Edmonton to interrogate Ralph At first he denied then admitted it stating that friend of Violas had given him $30 to do it Ralph was returned to Ieterlmrough and charged with uttering forged document June it 1977 he received three months imprison ment Iune lit the then Iet lnsp Bill Ierrin was assigned to the case He decided to place onst Bill ampbell of the Intelligence Branch of the WP itito jail with the suspect Within day ampbcll was playing cards with Ralph in the Quinte Regional Detention entre iii Napanec Ralph bragged that he and friend had killed someone during the course of robbery ampbell didnt press the matter but made date to get in touch when both men were released DANGERULS RRIN On Aug fl Ralph was released The follow ing night Campbell met with him in Peter borough Ralph boasted that he had killed his aunt the evening after his ncle Jim had gone to hospital ncc Ralph began talking he wouldnt stop He confessed to seventeen or eighteen robberies and bragged about serv ing two years in jail Ralph thought he was impressing ampbelL who had posed as member of an autotheft gaiig working bet ween Montreal atid Ontario He wanted job with the gang ampbell didnt believe any of Ralphs bragging with one exception Ile firmly believed he had murderer on the ltiie They made date to meet again oti Aug tit This time ampbell brought along onst Terry Hall posing as his brother and fellow member of the autotheft gang Ralph talked incessantly of having killed his aunt Late itito the night the three men taiked In the end Ralph promised to show them where he had hidden Violas body The following Friday the trio headed for the Ixahy farm In deep bush beside swamp the three men dug by flashlight but Ralph couldnt find his victims body Ile promised that if they returned with him at some future date he would produce the missing woman IIIIIIRAIIS SlRlNti On Aug at 03 Iet lnsp Icrrin decided to pull the plug on the investigation Ile arrested Ralph and at the same time picked up his girlfriend Barbara Ilartwick for questioning Barbara revealed that Ralph had admitted to her back in Nov 1976 that he had killed his aunt Ile said he had shot her three times Ierrin interrogated the suspect Ralph claimed he had nothing to say Then he in formed Ieirin You riiade mistake picking me up today you should have waited day and you would have had the body In the wee hours of Friday Aug 26th Ralph indicated that he wanted to see Perrin At the ungodly hour of 330 Ralph Ixahy led the officer to the area beside the swamp where he and the two undercover agents had dug previously Ile stated that he had marched his aunt down to the edge of the swamp and had shot her three times with her husbands 22 caliber rifle The murder weapon was turned over to Ierrin Digging began later the same day but try as they might they couldnt find the body Finally Perrin brought iii some heavy earth moving equipment and on Tuesday Aug 30 the shovel uncovered the body of Viola Ieahv She had en shot three times in the area of the chest and abdomen Ballistic tests con firmed that two of the bullets had been fired from the Leahys rifle Later Ralph told doctors that he hated his aunt He had mulled over the possibility of killing her for several weeks After murder ing his aunt he left her where she fell but returned the next day and buried her Ile had no remorse for what he had done aiirl was orr Iy sorry that he would have to go tojail The rather slight farrn boy had killed his aunt because he didnt like her All indica tions are that she was kind and considerate to her nephew On Feb 24 her nephew Ralph Leahy was sentenced to life imprisonment Ile will not be eligible for parole until he has served sixteen years of his sentence vvVVVf wwrvwvwwwmmeVVVY The doctor says Go to allergist with problem By 60
