By PAUL DELEAN Examiner Staff Writer English quintet Renaissance is undoubtedly among the classrest of acts in contemporary music The grou new album Song For All Seasons Sire 91476049 oesnt imperil that position but neither is it like Iy to do much to expand Renaissances rather limited follow mg Assisted by Landons Royal Philharmonic Orchestra the up presents eight new compositions within the rarnework of its ambitious gentle fusion of the classical and modern modes Some of this material is highly interesting notably selec iront Opening Out Back Home Once Again and Northern 1g The title track mi ht also have fallen into this group if its Instrumental intr uction hadnt been so similar to passage in Ambrosias Danse With Me George song from the 1976 album Somewhere Ive Never Travelled The rest of Song For All Seasons is lofty yet umnemorable demonstrating that even group with com mendable intentions strong classical foundation and natural sense of grandeur can be lured onto deadend musical paths dont know if it can be done without irreparably changing the youps character but Renaissance might also consider experimenting with more impassioned sound on future works Annie Haslams vocals are certainly delicate and melodic but they dont convey much emotion This frostiness keeps the group somewhat aloof even on its most alluring numbers GENE PAGE In concept Gene Pages new album Close Encounters Arista AB 4174 does not shape up as promising Who needs another batch of disco music to space theme Havent Meco and the like done that to death already Maybe not Against all odds veteran producer Page has pieced together likeable and entertaining variation on the spacedisco style Close Encounters succeeds largely because of its tone oUps latest album only 5050 effort which occupies an easygoing zone somewhere between the pomp of John Williams and the circusstance of Meco The nine tunes virtually all instrumental are of musical persuasion combining elements of jazz big band and disco Synthesizer is the dominant instrument All selections have link with space at least in their titles They range from predictables like Close Encounters and Theme From Star Trek to an unexpected and gentle ver sion of When You Wish Upon Star Page might even have an offbeat hit single in Beyond The Hole In Space an intriguing and catchy instrumental that is one of three original pieces on the album Not all numbers on Close Encounters get off the ground Star Trek for one is burdened by an overzealous treatment Still there are high points enough to make this satisfy ing work That certainly cant be said for the bulk of todays disco deluge SUTIIERLANI BROTHERS The Sutherland Brothers Iain and Gavin have long been excellent but underrecognized songwriters Theyre not always effective though as interpreters of their material and therein lies the problem with Down To Earth Columbia PC 35293 their seventh album The Brothers latest release is collection of 10 songs which for the most part go in one ear and out the other The sad thing is that these include several fine tunes One More Night With You Dark Ship Situations Somebodys Fool The Brothers are simply unable to do them justice Restraint has always been their policy and theyve prov ir the past that it could be effectively applied to their music The 1975 album Reach For The Sky for instance was delight from start to finish This time however the restraint is stifling The sounds so selfeffacing it borders on the meek In 1975 Rod Stewart recorded Sutherlands tune called Sailing It rocketed to the top of the English charts peak that the Brothers have never been able to reach with their own recordings Stewart might do equally well with selection or two from Down To Earth These songs are just crying out for some colorful and spirited interpretation to realize their potential Performance comes first in ballet TORONTO CP Dontjoin ballet group if youre shy If you tremble at the thought of having your
