The many faces of Geoff Tomkinson of workshop on paper sculpturing at the Georgian Bay Regional Library System Morrow Road Barrie Tomkinson conducted the workshop as part of the librarys recent open newspape By PAUL DELEAN Examiner Staff Reporter LAFONTAINE The title of the only Frenchlanguage newspaper in Simcoe County is Le Gout De Vivre which seems only fitting By definition Le Gout De Vivre implies taste of life desire to fully experience its of ferings The newspaper is endeavor ing to do just that in its own small way by providing the Francophone population of the Penetang area with voice for what some believe to be an en dangered culture Le Gout De Vivre isnt large publication it has 550 subscribers and might sell another 50 copies on local news stands As papers go it isnt at all stick or fancy But then how many are when written and assembled by volunteers It is above all community publication one which welcomes and usually finds room for the submissions of many local contributors says editor Claudette Paquin Poems recipes social notes letters local stories as long as theyre in French and passany written are accepted Le Gout De Vivre dates back to 1971 It began as high school paper the brainchild of teacher Sister Priscilla Maurice and her students of ï¬ancais at Pentanguishene Secondary School In 1976 grant from the Secretary of State allowed for the hiring of students to con tinue publication through the summer The format was then changed from pamphlet to tabloid The arrival of fall meant ex piration of the grant but Le Gout De Vivre carried on Ms Paquin and Ursule Maurice directed the project Fran cophones from the Penetang area made it work with their subscriptions ads and editorial contributions The paper averages one 20 page issue month There have been times Ms Paquin ad mits when the financial outlook was bleak but by some miracle the paper always comes out Ms Paquin is Georgian Col leges program supervisor and community worker in the Penetang area native of Montreal she first visited the area four years ago when pro gram of summer courses was offered locally by Glendon Col lege of Toronto She stayed on that fall to teach school and hasnt left Her volunteer duties as editor of Le Gout De Vivre eat up free time on weeknights and weekends and sometimes even working hours Im lucky My employer allows me to take care of the PETERBOROUGH Ont CP United Church minister who is suffering from cancer says that doctors should not withhold information about the disease from cancer patients and they shouldnt tell them average life expectancies Rev EF Dorsch who has myeloma cancer of the lymph glands was told in 1974 by doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto that he had only yeartolive Now the doctors have told the 58yearold minister his conditionis stable Dorsch said time limits on life expectancy are only and doctors From cancer victims paper even when it sometimes spills over into my normal hours of work She admits that she knew nothing of newspapers when she took the reins of Le Gout De Vivre in the fall of 1976 Its been learning process with much to learn yet There were so many errors in our first couple of issues were doing better now At least we know what tabloid means now she laughs DOESNT PULL PUNCHES Much of the copy comes from area residents but most editorials are written by Ms Paquin and she doesnt pull any punches Concern for the survival of the FrenchCanadian presence in Penetang specifically and Canada as whole is reflected in every issue Ms Paquin doesnt deny that theres an editorial slant The paper is for anything that will help FrenchCanadians as WenchCanadians and against anything that threatens them and their identity she says Contrary opinions however get printed when submitted Ms Paquin says shes typed out many letters with which she disagrees for inclusion in past issues The subject which obviously preoccupies the editorial writers these days is the fate of Penetanguishene Secondary School Le Gout De Vivre is pushing for separate French high school for the Francophone students and has labelled as pavilionghetto proposal to divide the existing school into French and English blocks At time when students spend larger portion of their day at school than at home its imperative that the school pro vide an environment that is educationally socially and culturally fulfilling Ms Pa quin says That is not happening at Penetang now she says The Francophone students are los ing their language at an amaz ing rate Theyre laughed at or in sulted when they talk French and become discouraged Grade Nine students who tend to be unsure of themselves in the first place are especially vulnerable she says By Grade 12 or 13 the damage is done Indifference from young peo ple is one of the problems fac ing Le Gout De Vivre In general students havent responded to the publication or the chance it offers for self expression to any significant degree in recent years the editor says Once in high school they dont see the use of French and therefore dont see the use of French paper Others do though and their Withholding information is wrong minister says shouldnt deal with patients with slide rule He said every hospital and clinic that dea with cancer patients should have liaison person to help atients and families learn at to expect of the disease and its treatment If they had person who could move around and talk to the person sitting alone in corner of the waiting room all tensed up it would be tremendous help he said The ideal person for such task is fellow cancer patient In their visits every two months to Toronto for chem otherapy he and his wife often meet people in the Adding little zest to workshOp on paper sculpturing Weston were captured on film during recent aminer Photos Le Gout De Vivre contributions keep the papc alive both editorially and financially Sometimes people Ive never heard of will send in an article says Ms Paquin The less she and Maurice need to write the more time they can spend on layout and editorials Financially the paper scrapes by on the strength of subscriptions $3 yeari and ads Its printed in Elmvalc After sharing an office in Penetaiig with the entrc DAcr tivites Fraiicaiscs and the local branch of LAssociatioii kinadicnnelrancaise do ntario 1AFi Le tout Dc Vivre rcccntly relocated in Lafontaiiie vacant store was offered at no rental fee by Mr and Mrs Lawrence lcsrochcs The premises arc now the combined headquarters of the newspaper ACFO Le Pisseiilit store that exhibits and sells the crafts of local Francophonis at no charge to thcmi and Georgian College Its bright airy otlicc and has already become meeting place for some of the locals That acceptance is encourag ing says Ms Paquin She brims with confidence and no small measure of pride while discussing Lc Gout Dc Vivre Its certainly in no danger of disappearance believe its essential that French Canadian paper exist in an area likethisshestates Twenty pages of odds and ends in French every month may not seem very signifi cant cultural vehicle but in an area of high Francophone con centration with predominantly English media its import may besizablc As Pierre Savard Rheal Beauchamp and Paul lliomp son conclude in their 1977 report on Frenchspcaking Ontario commissioned by the Ontario Arts Council Conditions in the Franco Ontarian community hardly favor cultural and artistic education animation and dissemination lhc multiplication iincccss routes to culture which often successfully compete with the traditional channels of school and family make living in French and in the French Canadian culture increasingly uncomfortable The only solution consists in ensuring strong presence of artists and other Francophoncs firmly rooted in their culture in all centres of French life This presence must be evi dent cverywhere from televi sion programs to the classrooms living culture cannot be confined to the home or club It must also live and be seen to live in the most dynamic media hospital waiting room Wht are frightened and who receive no help unless others in the waiting room with similar problems talk them Dorsch said that one rwson he has survived past the original time limit is tha he was diagnosed early His doctor found the cancer while testing him for allergies But it is not the drugs which keep him alive he contended Medical assistance faith in God and the prayers and support of caring people are the three importan aspects Claudette Paquin editor ofLe Gout De Vivre raps off story destined for the monthly newspapers latest edition The Frenchlanguage publication has existed in its present tabloid form since the summer of 1976 and now has circulation of about 600 In the Penetang area Ms Paquin believes it essential that FrenchCanadian paper house With Tomkinson at right is Margaret Worth of the Barrie Childrens Library Ex with difference exist in the area and she and other volunteers donate hours of their time and occaionally even money from their pockets to ensure that it does The newspaper which moved last month to new rentfree headquarters in Latontalne is
