an afar the oval Sires Stokes are big hit By GRANT WADE The government of Ontario takes per cent out of every dollar wagered on racing and five years ago decided that something should be put back into the sport The Ontario Sires Stake was one proposal and the one most acceptable to horsemen The idea was to provide some incentive to improve the breeding of harness horses and for that matter thoroughbreds too in this province programme was instituted and the top breeders in the business started bringing some of the outstanding sires in North America home to Ontario The situation has developed to the point where 1978 has Stake schedule worth well over three million dollars The best two and threeyearold trotters and pacers will battle it out for share of the spoils between now and next November Everyone has gained from this type of stake because many of the foals which do not develop into stake material will become favorites on the many raceways throughout our province The first of the 1978 series will be held at Barrie Raceway May 22 when matinee card at 130 pm will be raced That event is for three year old trotting colts and this years crop first appeared at the local oval in 1977 as twoyearolds At that time the track record for the age and gait fell on two occasions In the final division Jet Sky trotted the mile in 220924 The other stakes at Barrie Raceway this season includes twoyearold pacing colts and trotting fillies as well as the three year old pacing fillies The sophomore fillies also recorded Barrie Raceway mark in 1977 with UBD Judge get ting the job done in 206 Be sure to watch these up and coming young horses They will certainly win their way into the hearts of many racing fans during this 1978 campaign IN THE BACKSTRETHI The horsemen at Barrie Raceway have issued challenge to every other racetrack in Canada Tonight is set aside to race against Multiple Sclerosis and with early returns show ing the goal set falling the local boys under the direction of Gary rowe and Lloyd Spinks will certainly be doing their share At the time of writing our boys had surpassed the set goal 38ml and still had the May date to come Each and every dollar donated by the horsemen will be matched by management and now everyone is looking at $2000 as realistic figure tip of the old chapeau from this corner to each and every one of the boys who make beating Canada 50 on Thursday they should be well on their way to third consecutive world title Some people here are bit miffed that theRussians are al ways invited to these twocountry confrontations If it were matter of the best of the NHL against the best of Europe it would be natural to invite the Czechoslovakians But that overlooks the big point The Czechoslovakians are the good guys in the
