By NANCY FIGUEROA Of The Examiner When youve been away from home half year and youve studiously practised ballet during that time there is nothing nicer than coming home and relaxing says Jac queline Sloan Barrie girl studying with the Royal Win nipeg Ballet Thursday Jacqueline 16 flew home to warm reunion with her parents Don and Jeanette Sloan and her two brothers and one sister never thought Id miss my brothers and sister Jacqueline told The Examiner But you do get homesick Jacqueline tall golden haired beauty has obviously been missed by her family too Were so glad shes home said Mrs Sloan Coming home says Jacqueline is nice relief We were getting overworked near the end she said Our bodies needed rest Coming home however also poses few problems Im really going to have to watch my weight with all the Christmas baking and things she said And watching her weight is continual problem Although she isnt sure or is reluctant to tell what her weight is she says ballerina shouldnt weigh more than about 110 pounds Thats so the guys can lift you she said Her teachers confirm her fears Theyve told me theyre happy to have me here and that look promising she said But they say my weight is my biggest hurdle ENJOYS WINNIPEG Although Jacqueline misses Barrie she enjoys life in To Heart Egundgflgn Barries ballerina home Winnipeg She lives in duplex with three other ballet students one from Victoria BC one from Prince Ed ward Island one from St Thomas Ont and one of the school administrators We get along like sisters she says then dancing from to pm Their schedule includes school from am to 315 pm five days week plus two hours of dancing on Saturdays On top of that they have homework chores shopping and laundry to do They dont have television but any spare time often finds them naturally watching ballet The school supplies them with free tickets to any ballet company performing in Winnipeg plus free passes to any performances of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet It costs about $4000 for lomonth stint with the school more than the Sloans could manage bursary however was provided by Barries May Court Club The Sloans were overjoyed by the May Courts support When she has finished Grade 12 Jacqueline hopes to join the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company She said however It is very competitive field All sorts of things could happen There are 250 students enrolled in the schools profes sional program and the company is composed of less than 30 dancers Something about her however tells you she isnt just another young girl with impossible dreams of being prima ballerina For Jacqueline Sloan youre certain dreams are going to come true Elvis fans donate $$ teenage love of the late great Elvis Presley has been translated into dollars for the Ontario Heart Foundation courtesy two Barrie women Eleanor McCue and Jane Lapp are in their early 305 now they were boppers in the early 605 when Elvis was already well established as the King of rock and roll When he died they were both shaken by the loss of their teenage idol and resolved to do something to honor him So three years ago the two women held their first Elvis Presley Night dance with an Elvis imitator as the featured performer Because early reports stated the cause of the Kings death as heart failure they decided to donate all the proceeds to the Ontario Heart Foundation Subsequent revelations that in fact their hero died of drug overdose have not changed their original commitment The first years Elvis star was high school boy hired for $10 and the total profit was $575 Last year the ticket price was $15 and the top Canadian Elvis imitator performer from Toronto who calls himself Selvis donated his time for free The donation to the Heart Foun dation reached the $1000 mark This year says Eleanor Selvis will be retur ning and again donating his time The cost of tickets has been raised to $20 along with the rise in cost of just about everything else But thats still great calorie laden foods are equally dangerous saboteurs Here are some tips on how your hips can survive the holidays and you can salvage personal peace of mind from traditionally hec tic and fattening season For the Diet Desperadoes of January it is the same every year at this time Youre looking for painless weightless scheme you are feeling bulky guilty and desperate Youre ready to swear never again You are ready to try anything But are you ready for some common sense Can you put aside your panic for just while to face some hard facts First you should note this Many successful weight wat chers report that weight loss begins in the holiday The way in which you think about yourself can dramatically af fect your efforts at weight con trol positive outlook will affect your zating behaviour positiver but panic and guilt will surely undermine your at tempted weight Ioss because they know the perspective In stead of looking at an overall picture of achieving stable permanent weight panic makes you look towards crash dieting and other possibly dangerous methods Secondly you have been here before and you can be here again next year unless you begin right now to look at the overall picture Well be ing good nutrition and sensi ble weight maintenance do not happen by magic overnight They are an individual respon sibility and they do not look after themselves no matter how desperate you are to be thin Thirdly it could very well be that you as well as many others are simply better at losing weight than you are at keeping it off True Then start working on the idea that Januarys weight loss is only the first step towards the ultimate goal of weight con trol RESOLVES Concentrate on making some positive changes for this year Be it resolved in 1980 that This is the year learned that diet is simply what eat Everyones diet should be consistent wellbalanced and nourishing Therefore will choose food plan that is consistent wellbalanced and nourishing In addition the food should taste good because am look ing for weight control not punishment am making it my business to findout from doctor nutri tionist or reputable weight control organization how to plan proper meals and how much food is enough will choose desirable realistic weight to strive towards will make it my responsibility to maintain that weight through sensible sound approach eating wisely and well will stop telling myself that ant big boned too busy victim of heredity it too set in my ways to change TEMPTATION Anything is possible if work ed at one day at time In stead of dreaming about wak ing up Television is not your best friend right now Too often it leads us into bad eating habits Be selective about the programs you choose to watch Whatever you do dont eat in front of the television for the time being Make mealtime an experience in itself Take at least 20 minute for our meal You will feel fuller and more satisfied Reduce your appetite go for brisk walk Gaining weight over the holidays can become habit The panic and desperation you may feel right now are pro bany based on vague suspi cion that you have been out of control for too long and that you have eaten too much all day every day While the first part of that statement may be true chances are that the second part is an exaggeration Dont waste your time feel ing guilty Make weight con trol habit with yourself in
