Garden Notes Gift ideas for junior gardeners By JEAN EAIKLE Of The Barrie Horticultural Society This is still the Year of the Child and if you have done nothing to contribute to some child through the year how about interesting them in nature Wars come and wars go time changes and even races are wiped out but Mother Nature goes on forever Therefore an understanding and love of nature is great steadying force in life at time when nothing seems very permanent Start with some seeds flower pot and windowsill or better still come slips of easy care plants Explain every step the importance of soil what is in it and what plants need to live Give them responsibility Tell them plants will get sick if not cared for and soon would die Praise the kids when they do well Personally am not impressed with what has been done in the Year of the Child Children need love they need to know that someone care they need to know they are respected as persons and above all they need to know those who care expect and believe they can measure up to high ideals and expectations however rough life may be for them Christmas is giving time so give freely of yourself Give things you have grown baked sewn or created in any way These gifts mean so much more MAGAZINES There are two magazines highly recommend parents and grandparents give their children one is Owl and the other is Chickadee Both are published by The Young Naturalist Foundation 59 Front St East Toronto Ontario MSE 183 Chickadee is for children to Owl is for those years and up The kids love them Cost is $800 per year for 10 issues People are buying their Christmas plants now and it is so easy for the poor things to get half killed enroute from the shop to home see people carrying their plants out and into the cold unwrapped and can just visualize the leaves all drooping and falling off and hearing people call to ask can you tell me what is wrong with my plant Wrap them up well and keep them out of draughts my phone is busy Another thing for childrens gifts is pets BUT NOT unless the home wants that pet can afford its upkeep and is prepared for it Give book on proper care for that pet along with it An unwanted pet is like an unwanted child what could be more heartbreaking SOCIETY NEWS The annual meeting of Barrie Horticultural Society was held Dec 6th at Codrington School The 1980 President is Lionel Brock and
