seww rut cu helen mason on horses Maintaining mount in top condition Want to keep your mount in top condition this winter During the next two weeks two local professionals will tell how they add that little bit of extra care during winter mon ths As trainer Brock McCauley finds he must constantly win in order to keep business coming This means keeping his horses in top shape and ready for those early spring shows when its important to make new contacts When trying to keep halter horses fit during cold winter months its vital to have an arena claims McCauley who conducts seminars teaches clinics and shows halter champions from his Bradford Ontario training complex He says its difficult to fit hose without indoor facilities because he feels the ideal winter barn temperature is 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit Kept inside at these temperatures horse can easily chill when worked outside during extremely cold weather McCauley blankets his horses just before their first shed in the spring After that first blanketing he keeps his horses warm so they never grow another hair coat This means you blanket in May for March show he explains DOUBLE BLANKETS When he buys horse late in the season after its already started winter coat McCauley double blankets and hoods the new horse until its almost in sweat The idea is to keep the horse so warm that hell shed his coat early If the horse gets too sticky McCauley removes one of the blankets He doesnt want the horse to rub itchy patches that can result from too much perspiration This would undo the finish McCauleys trying to put on the horse He gives the new horse warm bath every week or so plus rinse after every workout Hell shed within six to eight weeks says McCauley even in the middle of winter But you must keep the horse blanketed to stop from restarting the hair cycle This means maintaining cons tant temperature Because he feels high winter humidity is bad for his horses McCauley heats his barn with propane fuel which absorbs moisture During overcast days he turns on the barn lights so his The mens fortyeight team schedule at the Bar rie Curling Club for top event saw Henry and his rink take Sunny Chalmers rink to win the put them to work when take them outside so the horse perspires he explains bring them right back in after wards horses winter workout must be similar to that of crosscountry runner quick warmup and cool down in side In this way the horse avoids chills which will lead to the growth of winter hair McCauley longes his halter hgrses at walk and extended trot in pasterndeep 32 to inches sand At trot the horses uses all four legs McCauley feels this gait gives bet ter muscle tone makes the horse more cupple and brings up the top line He doesnt longe at canter because he feels this does nothing for the horse His horses work with necksweat until they perspire heavily McCauley then brings them into the warm barn and bathes them to prevent scalding Working horses are never allowed to stand idle
