10 the examinenf Fridgyniov 30 1973 Commentators lying to fans By an HARPER Chay have to either stop watching hockey games on TV or turn the sound off This season have been watching one game on TV and listening toanother For example last Sunday night was watching the game from New York where the Leafs played the Rangers It had to be one of the slowest dullest games that have ever watv cbed and if they had set it to music it would have been slow waltz Yet the commentators were trying to tell us that it was great game with great plays They must think that the people in the television audience are fools We all know that sports commentators need the sport to keep their jobs just as the sports reporters need sports But how is the game of hockey going to get better when it is not reported as It really is Last Monday the sports reporters were writing about different game than the one watched The only criteria many of the commentators and reporters use is whether or not the Leafs win the game If hockey player reads in the paper that his team played good game when in truth it was terrible effort for profes sionals how is that going tomake him play better GOALIENIIINII POOH Once again get back to the goal keeping It has been very poor this year in the NHL Yet the commentators on TV try to tell us that goalkeeper made great save on shot that he actually played incorrectly in many cases falling to the ice before the shot has been made The very next time that he does the same thing but isnt as lucky the puck goes in the net the commentator will say what great goal it was to these men who have been around the game of hockey most of their lives as hockey players and now as sport scastirs really believe what they are saying to the millions of hockey fans who are watching If they do then think that they should be made to sit through reruns of the games many many times can remember radio announcer by the name of lem Mcfartliy who was famous for his sports announcing many years ago He would broadcast fight and he would make it sound so exciting Then the next day the newspapers would tell how dull the fight was He was noted for doing this but it was entertaining to the radio audience Television is dif ferent medium We can see what is going on and can see whether game is good or bad so why wouldnt they blast the players for inferior play IALI THEM AS THEY ARE Maybe if the sportscasters and reporters started calling the games as they really are the teams would start to play hockey the way it should be played The average player cant say that he isnt being paid to work hard so why shouldnt he give of himself Most of the hockey have seen this year in the NHL has been terrible know that the players can play better for they did when they were in lunior and they also play bet ter when they get in the playoffs or when they play teams from Europe love the game of hockey yet what am seeing lately makes me feel that it is different game altogether sure hope that something is done to improve the game and soon Barries own Brian Kinsella is having good season with Port Huron in the International League In 16 games Brian has scored 15 goals and assisted on Brian is the property of Washington in the NHL and the aps could certainly use player of Brians calibre right now have been saying for years that he is too good to be playing in the minor profes sional leagues Maybe this will be his year know that the fans from Harrie will be rooting for him No Flyers lead in statistics The fact the Barrie Flyers are tied for third place in the Georgian Bay Intermediate League and have 500 recoid can truly be attributed to team effort Latest statistics show that the Ilyers do not have player among the league top 14 scorers The Flyers are also not leading in any individual or team categories Paul ltegan is the Flyers leading scorer with 15 points which ties him for twentythird spot in the seventeam league His lincmate Bob Coulson has recorded 14 points The closest the Flyers come to leading in category is in shortshanded goals They have three which ties them with two other teams for second place SIOIIINII LEADERS il Pts Iim AI NesbittOwenSound 14 13
